B2 COURSE

Unit 22 - Work & Employment

22.1. - Work and employment (Vocabulary)

Applying for a job:

When you apply for a new job you will usually have to send a C.V. (curriculum vitae) and cover letter to
the employer. Your C.V should convey your personal details and skills to the employer in the best way
possible. The objective of your C.V is to make you stand out from everyone else and show the
employer WHY you are best suited for the job.

VIDEO - Episode TEN 2014 The Apprentice UK Series 10

Writing a successful C.V. :

There is no ‘right’ way to write a C.V. However, all C.V.’s should include the following information.

Personal details (Date of birth, address, email address, contact number)

Education and qualification e.g. Sept 2005 – May 2009  BSc Hons English Language University of
Bristol, Bristol
Work Experience – (Where have you worked before that is relevant to the job you are applying for?)
E.g. you may have lots of work experience that you want to write about in your C.V. BUT you have to
be selective in order to be concise. Only write about the jobs which you required similar skills for as
the current position you are applying for.
Skills (Why would you be good for the job? Are you punctual, confident, highly motivated, and able
to work in a team? etc.)
Interests and hobbies (What makes you different to everyone else? What makes you stand out? Are
you captain of a football team? Do you do a lot of voluntary work in your free time?
References / OR/ References available on request. (Someone who can be contacted by the
employer to talk about you, normally a previous employer / university lecturer)
Remember:
Your C.V. should be clear, informative and concise. It should be well structured and not too long (2
pages max).
Don’t lie about your skills or work experience in your C.V because you may be asked questions about
your C.V. in a job interview!
