Creating and Configuring Trends: Struxureware Building Operation 1.9

Trend logs record values from variables over time for analysis and troubleshooting. There are several types of trend logs that record values based on time intervals, value changes, triggers, or manually. Trend logs store values in a circular buffer, overwriting old values when the log is full. Logs can be enabled, disabled, and have start conditions configured to control when recording begins.

Creating and Configuring Trends

StruxureWare Building Operation 1.9

EcoBuilding Training Academy
Trends Overview

The function of a trend log:

• Log the variable that it connects to and store the records

Storing large amounts of records:

• Connect an extended trend log

Records within the trend log and extended trend log can be
presented:
• Numerically in a trend log list

• Graphically in a trend chart

Real-Time Plotting

Real time plot is a variable displayed directly in the trend

chart
• Instant reflection of the variable
• Displayed in real (local) time

A real time plot can only be displayed in a trend chart

How Trend Logs Work

Trend log creates a Record

A record creates a Log Value & Time Stamp

Trend logs can log:

• Analog Variables
• Digital Variables
• Integer Variables

Trend logs should be created on the server where the

point resides
Trend Log Types

Interval Trend Logs – The “classic” temperature log

Change of Value Trend Logs – Pressure, quick changes
Variable Triggered Trend Logs – Controlled by program
Meter Trend Logs – Controlled by program with special consumption features
Manual Trend Logs – Record external data, normalized
Implicit Trend Logs of IO variables
• Change of Value log
• Auto defined Delta
• ~500 values, circular storage
External Trend Logs – Xenta, B3 logs
Extended Trend Logs - Collect and store data from other logs
System capabilities
The ES device supports, The AS-P device supports,
• 2000 Internal Trend logs * • 3000 Internal Trend logs *
‒ 100000 records * ‒ 100000 records *

• 25000 Extended Trend logs * • 1500 Extended Trend logs

‒ 600000 records * ‒ 600000 records *

• Maximum 2.5 billion records * • Maximum 10 million records

• 500 trend records per implicit trend logs

*Trend log limits based on configurations with 5 minute (or

larger) record intervals
Interval Trend Log

Collect data at a specific time interval

Checks the monitored value at each interval

Records the new value if it differs from the last recorded

value by more than the delta
• Delta (Δ) is the difference between the current variable value
and the last log value

• To log a variable strictly according to time interval, set the delta

to zero
Interval Trend Log (cont…)

An Interval trend log with a delta may reduce the storage of

similar records

If an interval trend log has a delta and a calculation method

that uses periods, make sure the period contains the
required amount of records to generate a correct calculation.
• If the value does differ from the previously logged value by less
than the delta within the period, no or too few values are
recorded for the calculation.
Meter Trend Log

The meter trend log is a variable triggered trend log with

extra functionality to handle consumption calculations
independent of meter rollover or meter exchange
Meter Trend Log (cont…)

Manage replacement of meter

• Must do this if using meter trend logs

• When creating a new meter trend log or replacing

an old meter with a new one,

• Enter the settings of the old meter so that the new

meter starts with the correct time/values
Change of Value (COV) Trend Log

Records the variable each time the difference between the

current value and last log value changes by more than the
delta
• Has a limit of 10 records/second

• Setting the delta too small will cause the logs to quickly fill
Variable Triggered Trend Log

Records the variable according to the changes of an associated

trigger variable
‒ Example –Records a variable every time a switch changes to true
Variable Triggered Trend Log (cont…)

You can configure the trend log to collect data Trigger Variable
when the trigger value changes to: True

Manual Trend Log

Records data that you manually enter

Does not log a variable

Use this type of trend log when values from offline devices
have to be manually registered to the trend log
• Example – you want to create a trend log that monitors an
electricity meter that can not be connected to StruxureWare
Building Operation
Implicit Trend Log

A change in value trend log which monitors the IO variable

Unit Delta
Temp 0.2 °C (0.2 °F)
Records a new value if the variable exceeds the delta
Voltage 0.2 V

Delta is automatically defined by StruxureWare Building Current 0.3 mA

Operation depending on the measured unit of the device
connected to the IO port
Resistance 200 ohm

The implicit trend log exists on all IO points

• When a device is connected to an IO port, the implicit trend log is
automatically configured and starts recording values

Stores 500 records before old records are overwritten

Circular Storage

All trend logs in SBO use circular storage (FIFO)

How many records a trend log stores before overwriting old

ones depends on the trend log configuration

Example:
• A trend log is configured to store 10 records

• The logging starts and the first record x1 is stored

• After 10 records the trend log is full

• The next record x11 overwrites the oldest record x1

• The next logging x12 overwrites the oldest record x2 and so on

Start Conditions & Enable/Disable

Interval & Change of Value Logs

• Start recording values when the configured
start condition is filled
Trend Log Created
• Possible manually stop recording values by Start Condition: Direct

disabling a log and resume by enabling it

Logged Value Disable Enable
• Direct Start - start recording values 10 seconds
after the log is created or enabled

supports all the calculation methods and export to
XML or CSV files.
Extended Trend Logs

Internal Logs
Collect and store data from: ES
Extended Logs
• Internal Trend Logs

• Other Extended Trend Logs

• External Trend Logs

Saves data on a higher level for longer storage before Internal Logs
FIFO AS
Extended Logs
Makes data available for Backup and Archive operations
Required to present log data in Reports (uses Extended
Logs in ES Only)
Can be viewed in - SmartStruxure

Upload every 20%
Trend Log Upload at least every 1 hour

Configure extended trend logs to transfer data

several ways:
Function Explanation

Smart Log Automatically updates the transfer rate with

respect to the frequency of records, network
speed, and the capacity of the server that
runs the trend log and extended trend log

Transfer Every Transfers records every time a set

percentage threshold of records on the trend
log is reached

Transfer at Last Transfers records at a set time interval even

Every though transfer every or smart log threshold
is not reached
Extended trend log that transfers records from a trend
Force Transfer Executed by the user to manually force a log each time the trend log exceed a record volume of
transfer even though the transfer threshold is 20% or every hour
not reached
Extended Trend Logs (cont…)
Trend Log Extended Trend Log

Editing a record in the extended trend log

• Changes do not effect the connected trend log

Editing a record in the trend log

• Changes are transferred to the extended trend log the next time a
transfer occurs

You can edit both the trend log and the corresponding record in the
extended trend log
• The edit is written 2 times in the extended trend log record
Trend Log Lists

Numerically displays records

Records processed by a calculation method before

presentation in the trend log list or trend chart
Calculation Methods

Calculation methods available:

• Maximum

• Minimum

• Average

• Summary

• Delta

• Delta over period

• Meter consumption
Calculation Methods (cont…)

Maximum
• The maximum value of each point is presented

Minimum
• The minimum value of each point is presented

Average
• The average of the values in each period is calculated and
presented
Calculation Methods (cont…)

Summary
• The sum of the values in each period is calculated and presented

Delta
• The change to previous value is calculated and presented

Delta Over Period

• The change over a period is calculated and presented

• The value at the period limit is often interpolated based upon the
last value in the old period and the first value in the new period
Trend Charts

Displays trend log records as a series

Variables can also be displayed in a trend chart
• “Real-time plotting”

Drag-n-drop variables or logs to add records to existing chart

Live Update of Trend Log data
• If activated, the trend chart series that presents a SBO trend log
in local time is automatically updated with the latest records

A trend chart series that presents records from a field

controller trend log needs to be refreshed manually
Trend Charts (cont…)

Records can be presented live from an extended trend log

Latest records of the connected trend log are (more) frequently transferred to
the extended trend log
• Decreases the delay that can occur when the extended trend log has to wait for the
transfer threshold to be reached before new records from the trend log are
transferred

• The trend chart presents the latest records

Trend Charts (cont…)

If two extended trend logs are connected between the trend log and the
Xenta or
trend chart, the transfer that occurs when a trend chart presents
b3
records live only transfers the records from the nearest extended trend
log

AS
The transfer threshold rate between the trend log and the first connected
extended trend log remains unaffected

ES
Trend Charts (cont…)

When waiting for a new record, the trend chart draws a

dotted line from the last recorded value and forward

When a new value is recorded , the dotted line between

the last and the new record is replaced by a solid
series
