Allied Seminar: Guest Lecture-Resilient & Sustainable Planning Ms. Mili Majumdar

The guest lecture covered sustainable and resilient planning through various case studies and strategies. Key topics included designing energy efficient and climate responsive buildings using biophilic principles, sustainable urban drainage systems, and green spaces. Strategies to optimize energy performance in new and existing buildings were also discussed, such as applying bioclimatic design and using renewable energy sources. The Manitoba Hydro Place in Winnipeg, Canada was presented as a case study of a LEED Platinum certified building that uses passive systems like atria and natural ventilation to reduce energy usage.

Strategies for Optimizing Energy Performance

• Apply Bio-climatic architectural principles and use onsite sources and sinks.
• Relax Design Criteria to reduce demand
• Use efficient lighting, equipment, space conditioning, water heating systems and effective controls
• Use Renewable forms of Energy to meet a part of consumption.

MANITOBA HYDRO PLACE
SUSTAINABLE
LOCATION PLAN
SITE PLAN

Manitoba Hydro Place is the headquarters building

of Manitoba Hydro, the electric power and natural gas
utility in the province of Manitoba, Canada. Located at
360 Portage Avenue in downtown Winnipeg and
connected to the Winnipeg Walkway system, Manitoba
Hydro Place received LEED Platinum certification in May
2012, making it the most energy efficient office tower in
North America and the only office tower in Canada to
receive the LEED Platinum rating.
The brief was developed into a project charter defining the project's core
principles and against which design concepts would be measured: that it
would be flexible and adaptable to new technology and workplace
changes, offer world-class energy efficiency, offer a signature design to
enhance the image of the company and the city, help strengthen the city
downtown, and be a solid financial investment.

Passive systems (i.e. south-facing winter gardens, natural daylighting, and

the solar chimney) take advantage of the environment and natural
processes to reduce energy usage. Active systems (i.e. dimmable,
programmable lighting) help maximize the effectiveness of passive
systems and supplement them as required.
• 3- and 6-storey atria function as solar collectors, air
exchangers, air handlers, and air shafts;
• south-facing winter gardens warm air entering the
building;
• natural ventilation minimizes the need for a forced-
air circulation system:
• fresh air is drawn into the south atria and is
conditioned as it rises;
• air flows through the building via raised floors
and flows up the solar chimney;
• the parkade is heated with exhaust air routed
from the solar chimney during winter months.
• operable windows on the inner wall of the double
façade add to natural ventilation;
• higher ceilings maximize natural lighting and reduce
lighting requirements;
• geothermal heat pump system warms the building in
winter and cools it in the summer.
SUMMER OPERATION

• Within the splay of the two towers, a series of three

six-storey south atria, or winter gardens, form the
lungs of the building, drawing in outside air and pre-
conditioning it before it enters the workspaces
through adjustable vents in the raised floor.
• Depending on the season, 24 metre tall ‘waterfall’
features in each of the atria humidify or dehumidify
the incoming air. During colder temperatures,
recovered heat from exhaust air, and passive solar
radiant energy are used to warm the fresh air.
• The conditioned air is drawn through the raised
floors into the office spaces through underfloor fan
units.
• Occupants and computers and other sources of
heat cause air to rise, which is then drawn north and
exhausted by the solar chimney.
