GPON Tracer™ Description and Specifications

This document details the main features and capabilities of the GPON Tracer
handheld testing device, which is used for testing and troubleshooting of GPON
networks in the field.
The primary use of GPON Tracer is to troubleshoot issues on the PON by providing
various measurements and indications. In addition, it must allow escalation of
complex issues to higher tiers of support by recording the data in a format that allows
deeper analysis.

1 Basic Features
• Passive: GPON Tracer passively connects to the line and does not affect the
data transfer between the OLT and the ONUs/ONTs. It must not regenerate or
actively amplify the GPON signal.
• Chipset independent: Does not contain a GPON chipset to ensure its full
compatibility with any GPON equipment in the market.
• Fault alerts: Provides clear indications about measurements exceeding user-
defined thresholds.
• Recording: The tester stores raw data and measurements in the form of
samples and/or detected information. It can transfer this data for deeper
analysis by other tools.
• ONU stand-alone testing: GPON Tracer has an option to test an ONU stand-
alone without an OLT, by generating messages and traffic and validating the
ONU's behavior according to pre-defined test criteria. In this mode and only in
this mode it actively generates signals and transmits them into the ONU.

• Saving and reporting: Saves measurement results and allow viewing the
highlights of each measurement after it is completed, as well as generating a
report on a PC.

2 GPON Tracer Detailed Specifications

2.1 Connection Modes
GPON Tracer may be connected to the PON in any of the following modes:
• In series, near an ONU, for testing a single ONU against the OLT
• In series, near the OLT, for testing the whole PON
• In parallel, near the OLT, through test points or splitters on the fiber, for
testing the whole PON without traffic interruption

2.2 User Interface

GPON Tracer has a built-in color touch screen and provides the following
indications in textual and graphical formats:
• Optical power levels for the OLT and for every one of the ONUs on the PON
• Identification of all the active ONUs on the relevant section of the PON
• ONU identification by the manufacturer's S/N for all the ONUs that went
through the ranging process
• Downstream and upstream data rates
• Link and transmission errors
• ONU deactivations, including deactivations resulting from power outage
• The password for every one of the ONUs
• A list of problems that were identified on the PON, including traffic
congestion, ONU power outage, ONU password conflict, rogue ONU etc.
• A graphical comparison of the upstream transmissions of the ONUs with the
bandwidth map allocations from the OLT, for the purpose of identifying a
rogue ONU

2.3 Speed Test

The Speed Test tool displays and records the speed test results in textual and
graphical formats and clearly indicates if the test passed or failed.

2.4 Upstream Transmission Analysis

The Upstream Transmission Analysis tool compares the planned upstream
transmission (OLT BWmap allocations) with the actual transmission and
presents it in a graphical format. By doing so it immediately and easily
highlights collision problems, missing bursts and Rogue ONU.

2.5 Optical Power Measurements

GPON Tracer can provide the following optical power measurements:
• 1490 nm downstream GPON signal
• 1550 nm downstream RF overlay signal
• 1310 nm upstream GPON signal
In case multiple ONUs are being measured, the upstream signal power level can
be indicated individually for every ONU.

2.6 ONU Stand-Alone Test

GPON Tracer supports testing of an ONU on a stand-alone for the purpose of
isolating a faulty ONU. This test is based on emulation of some of the OLT
functionalities. In the frame of this test GPON Tracer connects to the ONU,
causes it to range, sends it BWmap allocations and verifies that it responds
correctly by transmitting upstream bursts in the allocated timeslots, and only in
these timeslots.
GPON Tracer has the capability to evaluate the ONU's behavior and present a
pass/fail result. In case of a failure it also provides details about the nature of the
failure and in which phase of the test it occurred.

2.7 Built-in Recording Mechanism

To allow escalation of complex issues to higher tiers, GPON Tracer has a built-
in recording mechanism, which allows recording of the GPON MAC, OMCI
and upper layer protocol data for extensive multi-layer analysis with the GPON
Xpert multi-layer analyzer.
TraceSpan provides a free software tool for downloading files from the GPON
Tracer for analysis with the analyzer.

2.8 IPTV Service Analysis

The IPTV Service Analysis solution presents various IPTV performance metrics
in both tabular and graphical formats and provides various options for filtering
and customization of the results to focus on the user's specific needs. Its analysis
results may be exported at the click of a button to graphical HTML and PDF
formats.
