System description

System description
The laptop tool is intended for servicing the Sandpiper computer system for the SK 700 and Encore
510 petrol pump series. This program permits the user to easily perform various service tasks for
the Sandpiper computer via a menu structure. These tasks include software upload, as well as
display and transmission of event logs and configuration files. The connection monitor displays the
status of ongoing operations to keep the user informed about current processes at all times. The
software's menu structure and menu items are explained below.

The main window

The main window shows all data of relevance to the current connection. To establish a connection,
it is necessary to enter the required petrol pump's serial number. This number is prefixed to all
downloaded files to permit clear identification of each one.

Settings which can be modified by the user are saved in a file named Laptop Tool.cfg under a folder
named Bin in the application's installation directory (usually: C:\Programs\Gilbarco\SK700 Laptop-
Tool\Bin\Laptop Tool.cfg).

Fields in the main window

Fields in the main window

Pump: The currently selected petrol pump's serial number is displayed here.

COM port: This field indicates the interface via which the connection was established. COM port 1
is the default setting here. However, any communication port between 1 and 10 can be selected via
the menu path File->Settings->COM port. If a selected communication port does not exist, the
Windows operating system issues the message Cannot find file. If the selected communication port
exists but is not connected to a system, the tool attempts to find a system for about 35 seconds, after
which the connection is interrupted. The setting is saved in the configuration (.cfg) file.

Baud rate: The transmission rate via the current connection is displayed here. Connections for
downloading log files and reading / writing parameters provide a baud rate of 38,400. Connections
for updating system software provide a baud rate of 115,200. This setting cannot be changed by the
user.

Status: This field indicates whether a serial interface is currently open.

File destination: All downloaded files are saved in this path. The default folder is Logs in the
application's installation directory. This setting can be changed as required via the menu File-
>Settings->File destination. Changes to the setting are saved in the configuration file.

Current time setting in pump: Once a 38,400-baud connection has been established, the current
time and date are read out of the petrol pump and displayed here. This setting cannot be changed
directly by the user. The date and time parameters can only be changed inside the system, via the
menu Commands->Set pump time.

Connection monitor: This field provides a record of all executed operations and displays all
messages issued by the petrol pump via the communication (COM) port. The information in the
field is read-only. The menu item File->Settings->Select monitor log can be used to specify
whether all connection monitor entries are to be written to a file. The default setting here is the
Conn-Log.txt file under the Logs folder in the installation directory.

Progress: The file transfer progress and elapsed time are indicated here.

Results window: This field displays decoded event logs selected via the menu Commands->Show
event log. The default setting here is the last downloaded event log with the current pump number.
However, any other event log can be selected instead. The laptop tool attempts to find the software
version in the log to be displayed, and then ascertain the decoder to be employed. If this is not
possible, the latest decoder is selected automatically. The menu File->Settings->Select event log
decoder can also be used to explicitly select a decoder.
When a configuration is transferred to the system, this window indicates whether all parameters
have been set correctly. Parameters not set correctly are indicated with corresponding error
numbers. This setting remains unchanged until the application is closed.

Menu bar

Functions on the menu bar

The functions which can be invoked via
the File, Commands and Help items on
the menu bar are described below.

File->Connect: This establishes a connection to the petrol pump via the pre-selected COM port.
The menu item becomes inactive on establishment of a connection.

File->Disconnect: This closes an existent connection. The menu item becomes inactive once a
connection has been closed down.

File->Upload Sandpiper software: This commences upload of a new software to the selected
petrol pump. The following steps are executed here:

1. Saving of the old configuration on request.

2. Selection of the software to be transmitted.
3. Restart of the petrol pump to invoke the boot mode.
4. Execution of the Erase command after confirmation.
5. Download of the new software.
6. Start of the software on the petrol pump computer after completion of download.
7. Transfer of a saved parameter file to the system after restart.

A software upload can be performed at any time, regardless of whether or not a service connection
has already been established. Software upload can also be performed regardless of whether or not a
complete software version has already been installed on the petrol pump computer; in this case,
however, parameters cannot be saved.

File->Close: This closes the application.

File->Settings->File destination: Refer to the description of the File destination field on the
previous page. The menu item
becomes inactive once a connection
has been established.

select the communication port for establishing a
connection to the system. The menu item becomes
inactive once a connection has been established.

File->Settings->Language: This item is used to

select the language employed by the tool. This
setting is saved in the .cfg file. All languages for
which a corresponding .lng file is found in the
\Language folder are listed here. To activate a
new language setting, the tool needs to be
restarted. The menu item becomes inactive once a
connection has been established.

File->Settings->Select event log decoder: Refer

to the description of the results window on page 3.
All decoders found in the \Bin folder are listed here.
The menu item becomes inactive once a connection
has been established.

Menu bar

Commands->Get event log: The file GetLog.cmd is transferred to the petrol pump in order to
receive the file Eventlog.dat. The menu item becomes inactive once the connection has been closed
down.

Commands->Show event log: This decodes and displays a freely selectable Eventlog.dat file. If a
connection is presently active, the default setting here is the last downloaded file with the current
pump number.

Commands->Get all log files: The files

- "GetLog.cmd"
- "GetW&M.cmd"
- "GetFav.cmd"
- "GetEng.cmd"
- "GetStat.cmd"
- "GetVer.cmd"
- "GetLonVer.cmd"

are transferred to the system in order to fetch the corresponding log files. The menu item becomes
inactive once the connection has been closed down.

Commands->Transfer file: This transmits a freely selectable file to the petrol pump. The menu
item becomes inactive once the connection has been closed down.

Commands->Set time: This creates a file with the extension .pas and the desired time settings, and
transmits the file to the petrol pump. The menu item becomes inactive once the connection has been
closed down.

Commands->Get configuration: This transmits the file readConfAll_V_1.pag to the petrol pump
in order to read out current parameters. V_1 here stands for version 1. The laptop tool uses the file
with the highest version number to read out the configuration. The version number must only
contain numeric characters. The menu item becomes inactive once the connection has been closed
down.

Commands->Transmit configuration: This transmits a freely selectable parameter file to the

petrol pump. The menu item becomes inactive once the connection has been closed down.

Help->About SK700 laptop tool: This window indicates the version and provides copyright
details.

General notes:
Connection timeout: If the tool receives no signal from the serial interface for about 35 seconds, the
connection is interrupted. If this condition persists, the petrol pump might need to be restarted in
order to restore communication.
