Database Optimization
In order to optimize the performance of Cirrus 4.0 with data collected using previous Cirrus
versions, you will need to run the database optimization tool. Successful execution of this
database optimization tool:
• Improves performance during analysis (primarily GPA and Macular Change) by
creating and saving OCT fundus images for existing exams and adding signal strength
values to the index database.
• Creates missing patient IDs for successful DICOM connectivity.
• Allows import and analysis of Cirrus 1.0 and 1.1 exported data by correcting the
compression flag of LSO DICOM images.
☞ Note: Depending upon the size of your database, this installation process could take
a few hours. During this time you will not be able to run Cirrus 4.0 until optimization
is complete.
Following Cirrus 4.0 installation, click on Database Optimization Tool, as shown below in
Figure 13.
Or, go to Start > All Programs > Carl Zeiss Meditec > Cirrus HD-OCT > Database
Optimization Tool.
Click on the box for any or all of the options shown, as desired. By default, all options are
initially selected. The Correct Compression option is not needed if you do not use exported
data from Cirrus 1.0 or 1.1.
Click on Update Database. The following message appears (Figure 15):
Depending upon which options were chosen, you will receive Log Detail reports, like the
one shown in Figure 17, for OCT fundus creation and signal strength.
☞ Note: Plan and allow sufficient time for installation and configuration. Installation
may require up to 10 minutes, but configuration time varies depending if you
already have Microsoft.NET 2.0 software already installed on the review station
computer, and on your understanding of your particular network and your
familiarity with networking in general. These instructions are written to enable any
user to successfully connect their review station computer to the server hosting the
Cirrus database; however, for ease of configuration, we recommend that you consult
with personnel who may have advanced or expert knowledge of networking and
your particular network, such as your network or system administrator.
Notes on Licensing
Register License on the Cirrus Instrument
☞ Note: Cirrus Review must be licensed—but not installed—on the Cirrus HD-OCT
instrument, which will then act as a server for any number of review stations
(desktop or notebook PCs where you install the Cirrus Review software). For license
registration instructions, see License Registration starting on page 16. You may
use a single Cirrus Review installation CD to install it on multiple computer systems.
In this way, a single Cirrus Review license supports access from any number of review
stations to a single Cirrus HD-OCT instrument database. To access the database of each
additional Cirrus HD-OCT instrument requires registration of an additional license on each
instrument, which then can be accessed by every review station that points to its database.
☞ Note: Each review station can point to only one Cirrus instrument database at a
time, but you can switch between different instrument databases through Cirrus
Review. For instructions, see Switch Between Instrument Databases on page
42.
☞ Note: After installation, the first time you use 3D Volume Rendering, a Windows
Security Alert dialog appears (Figure 18).
Installation Prerequisite
Version 4.0 Cirrus Review Software enables database access only to Cirrus HD-OCT
instruments running system software version 4.0 or higher. To check the current version of
software running on the Cirrus instrument, click Help > About... from the Cirrus
application. Contact Carl Zeiss Meditec if your system is below version 4.0.
☞ Note: Cirrus 4.0 Review Software is compatible with Stratus 6.0 Review Software or
higher. Do not install Cirrus 4.0 Review Software on a PC running Stratus 5.0 Review
Software or lower.

5. In the User name field, select the desired user name. Then specify the correct
password for that user name in the Password field. Click OK to save and return to
the Map Network Drive dialog, and click Finish there to complete drive mapping and
exit that dialog.
Troubleshooting Configuration
If some error was made in configuration, different error messages could appear when you
try to launch the Cirrus Review Software, depending on the particular error. The error
messages appear after you click OK in the Browse for Folder dialog (Figure 42, page 33).
Insufficient Privileges
If you are logging on with a user name that has insufficient privileges to access the shared
database folder, the message “Cirrus database folder is read-only” appears (Figure
45).
When the message in Figure 47 appears, we recommend you click No and then Shut
Down to exit the application and attempt to repair the problem using the instructions
supplied below for these two scenarios. The first scenario is more likely, as you may have
missed a step in the configuration. The second scenario is much more rare.
1. Open the Control Panel and select Network Sharing Center. The Network Sharing
Center window appears (Figure 49).

7. Click OK.
8. Shut down the PC completely and restart.
You should now be able to map a drive to the share directory on the Cirrus Instrument.
Prerequisites
• Each review station and Cirrus instrument must be configured according to the
instructions in this document. However, note that if you configure every review station
and instrument on the same network using the same settings, user names, mappings
and permissions, etc., every review station should be able to connect to every
instrument database on that network.
• On the review station, you must have mapped a network drive to each Cirrus
instrument database to which you would connect.
Steps to Switch
1. From the Cirrus Review application, select Tools > Options > Database Selection....
The Browse for Folder dialog appears (Figure 58).
