Instrument Families at home!

K3-1st Grade
Last week you learned about the different instrument families and how they make
their sounds! Then you even go to find some at home around your house and
make up your own instrument! I saw lots of really great ideas! This week’s music
lesson will be broken into the following three parts:

Part 1: Videos
Part 2: A fun Game!
Part 3: Make your own instrument!
*note: you do not have to do this all in one day!

Part 1: Videos
Click here to watch a playlist about the instruments of the orchestra and the
science of sound!! After watching all of the videos, review the instruments you
saw! What were some woodwind instruments? How do they make sound? What
are some brass instruments? How do they make sound? What are some string
instruments? How do they make sound? What were some percussion (drums)
instruments you saw? How did they make sound? Which video was your favorite?
Why?

Part 2: Game time!
Now it’s time to play a game! This is called instrument 4 corners!
This game is to test your knowledge of instruments and their families.
Before playing this game, you must have already gone over the different
instruments and their families so the players are familiar with them. This
game requires multiple players and one person to be the caller. Play with
your family! The winner of the game is the last person standing (OR if you
don’t have a lot of players, you can use a points system instead. Give each
player a point for getting the correct corner. The person with the most
points wins! )

How to play:

1. Tape a sign for each instrument family (woodwind, brass, strings,

percussion) in each corner of the room equidistant from each
corner. (I recommend using pictures for younger students who can’t
read well. Be sure to review which corner is which so that they
understand)
2. Call out a certain instrument and the players will run to the corner of
the room that instrument belongs to. (For example, if I call out
trumpet, students will run to the brass family corner.) I have included
a list of instruments and the families they belong to on the next page
for you to utilize.
3. If players don’t run to the correct instrument family, they are out!
Have them sit middle of the room or somewhere out of the way where
they won’t get run over. (Again if you don’t have many players you
can always use a point system instead, in which case they are not
out, they just don’t get a point) player left standing! (or until someone
reaches 10 points!)
4. For an extra challenge set a timer on your phone for each round.
Players must get to the correct corner before the time goes off!
5. Play as many times as you wish! Feel free to modify this however you
wish to make it easier or harder for your family. Send Mrs. Bergin a
picture of the fun by Friday of this week! (April 3rd).

Part 3: Make your own instrument!
For this section you are going to make your own instruments. Click here for some
ideas on instruments that you can make at home with just regular household
materials! There are plenty of other ideas out there, don’t feel limited to just that
website! Send Mrs. Bergin a video of you playing your instrument! Tell me what
you made and what family it belongs to! Families with multiple siblings may
choose to make an instrument together, or to make your own. You decide. Your
video of your homemade instrument is do after spring break (April 14th)

Good luck and Have Fun!! If you need me at all please feel free to reach out! Hope
you are staying safe and healthy and that you have a wonderful Spring Break!
Happy Easter!
