Dear Ms Tancredi,
I am writing to you express my opinions about the last trip that took place this year
also how to improve our trips. School trips are a time-honored tradition in our school
that is why our school should pay more attention next times.
Educational Value
As a class teacher and Educational Visits Coordinator, one of the first things you need
to do is justify the trip in terms of educational value. A day, half-day or week out of
the classroom is going to cost time and money, so it has to have an educational benefit
to the children you are planning to take. Your planning should be aimed at getting the
school trip proposal passed by your head teacher.
Consult the school policy and Local Education Authority guidelines for school
outings. You may well find there is already a set procedure you need to work to. This
should also help you research everything you need to get that head teacher to nod in
approval.
Student Behavior
Most of the time, students will be excited to take part in any activity that gets them out
of a classroom for the day. That excitement can contribute to the educational
experience but may also limit the amount of education that actually occurs. Last time
there were some problems with students’ behavior which can annoy other students or
make the aim of trip unsuccessful.
Educators must find a way to keep students on topic throughout the trip. If you take
students to a national park to observe wildlife, your students will want to wander off
through the trees, spend the time using their music and communication devices or
talking with their friends about that weekend’s activities.
Similar effects can happen within confined areas, such as theaters for plays. Educators
must find ways to prevent their students from talking, texting or even sleeping, which
can ruin the experience for those around them. Educators must be able to trust and
control their students to have an effective educational trip, and this is not always the
case.
Cost
Thirdly, the cost was a key hindrance in conducting a school trip. Schools will often
have tight budgets for bus rental, gasoline allowance, food and drink purchase and
fees for trips. Anything beyond the school’s budget will need to come from another
source, sometimes from the educator himself. In our last trip, we were not informed
with prices in hotel before we came to hotel. That caused a huge issue between
students due to the school’s irresponsibility. Next time trip organizers should be
careful about cost issues.
