REFLECTION PAPER # 2

One of the goals of every law student in the Philippines is, of course, to pass the Bar
examination. While passing the Bar examination entails the end of one’s journey as a law
student, it also entails the beginning of one’s journey as a lawyer.

Last July 11, 2020, Atty. Judy Lardizabal conducted a lecture where she gave various
tips and methods that one can use in preparation for the bar exam, and how to ace the said
exam as well.

The first point that I took interest of was when she mentioned the necessity of having
the right mindset. She highlighted that the bar examination is not a competition and that one’s
capacity to pass the said exam is dependent on one’s self alone and not based on how others
have performed. I do agree with this, and I think it was an important point since some
individuals may think that the journey towards becoming an attorney is a race where you have
to compete. I, for one experience a certain amount of pressure that I must finish law school at
a designated time due to family constraints. But being assured of the point that passing the
bar examination was never a competition in the first place, creates a mindset within me that I
just have to focus on improving and preparing yourself for the Bar exam. Furthermore, I also
agree with the importance of having the right mindset - where if you focus on the reason as to
why you’re actually in law school and why you actually wanted to become a lawyer, acing the
Bar examination would easily be within your grasp.

Second, is the importance of managing your time or making your own schedule. I think
this is very important not just in preparation for the Bar examination, but also in law school and
in life in general. As a law student, one is surely going to be facing a lot of required readings
and being able to manage your time efficiently and effectively is one of the key elements in
being able to meet the demands of law school. The same is true in preparation for the Bar
exam. During the review for the Bar examination, you would roughly only have about 4 to 6
months to review if you take the exam after graduation. Yet the scope for the said examination
is truly vast. So being able to manage your time efficiently and effectively is highly important.

Third is the importance of motivating yourself to conquer and top the Bar exams. I
personally believe that keeping yourself motivated is highly dependent on one’s self. I highly
believe that it is something that one’s self can control and influence. Which is why, this point
caught my attention. In law school, it is admitted that one could easily get demotivated
especially when faced with circumstances of not being able to do good recitations, failing a
subject or an exam, etc. Hence, being able to keep oneself motivated is a challenge but at the

same time a necessity to be able to succeed not just in law school but also in acing the Bar
exam. Also, I believe that when you are motivated, you are able to perform well, and you have
more capacity to achieve whatever goal you may have. As mentioned by Atty. Lardizabal,
“victory belongs to those who persevere”.

Fourth is the importance of being able to cover everything as well as being able to
impress the examiner with your answers. Being able to impress the examiner with your
answers goes hand in hand with being able to cover everything while you are reviewing –
because if you were not able to study all points mentioned in the Bar syllabus, then it would
be a difficult feat to answer a question that is foreign to you. The same is true in law school. If
you are able to study all the required readings for the class, then you are able to impress your
professor during recitations and during exams. Which is why I also agree that both these points
are also essential in acing the Bar exam and in excelling in law school.

Lastly is of course, to trust God and lift everything to Him. As Atty. Lardizabal has
mentioned, “you cannot do it alone” – one must seek guidance with the Lord and trust that
whatever happens, God will deliver the result in accordance to His will. In the end, “nothing is
impossible with God”.

Overall, this lecture with Atty. Lardizabal has not just been fruitful but also motivating.
The lecture did not just give me tips and insights on how to ace the Bar exam, but it also
motivated me to study and work hard right at the start of one’s journey towards becoming a
lawyer – in law school. While it may still take time before it is time for me to take the Bar exam,
the lecture also imparted me with knowledge and tips that I can most definitely use while I’m
still in law school.
