Lab. No. List of Experiments No. Remarks

This document provides an introduction to Laboratory Session #01 on Digital Signal Processing at NED University of Engineering and Technology. The objective is to get introduced to the fundamentals of digital signal processing. It includes two sample post-lab exercises asking about the definition of digital signals and applications of digital signal processing in electrical engineering. Applications mentioned include using DSP to locate and extract unwanted harmonics in power signals, processing transient behavior of capacitor banks for power factor correction, and changing the phase and amplitude of signals.

Laboratory Session No. 01

Objective:
To get introduced with fundamentals of Digital Signal Processing
Post Lab Exercises:

Question 1:
What do you mean by the term digital? Explain it briefly.

Answer:
Signal or data expressed in computer understandable form e.g discrete set of values (such as 0
and 1), typically represented by values of a physical quantity such as voltage or magnetic
polarization.
As the processors only understand zeroes and ones (i.e binary), so we have to convert the
analog signals into digital signals by using Analog to Digital converters (ADC’s).

Question 2:
Write some (at least three) applications of DSP related to electrical (power) engineering.

Answer:
Following are the applications of DSP related to Electrical (power) engineering:

1. Whenever some unwanted harmonics adds up in the power signal due to noise or any
other reason, Digital Signal Processing can be used to locate and extract these
harmonics.

2. In power engineering, Signal processing is also used to process the transient behavior
of the capacitor bank connected in parallel to increase power factor.

3. This subject also deals will the requirements of the changes to be made in the original

signal in order to extract, embed information or change shapes of a signal due to

certain reasons.
For example it can be used to change the phase and amplitude of the original signal to
give the required output.
