Procedure
With the beam freely supported on pins 8, check that the cables 1 are correctly located in the
grooved pulleys 4. Place the load hangers 5 in position on the load bars 3 and add equal
weights to each hanger until the upper surface of the beam 2 corresponds to lines on the
indicator plates 7. In this suspended position, the supporting cables 1 should be tangential to
the curve of the cable at the point where it leaves the outer suspension rods.
Place a series of load hangers 6 equally distributed on the beam 2. Add equal weights to each
hanger 6 until the beam is in the suspended position. Note their values.
Increase the load on hangers 6 by equal increments and note the loads required to support the
beam for each applied load.

Exercise
To determine the experimental value of the tension in the supporting cables of a suspended
beam subjected to a uniformly distributed load.
Apparatus
Didactec Suspended Beam Apparatus
Procedure
Apply vertical loads to the suspended beam as indicated in the table and record the loads
required to support each set of applied loads.
The Equation is T1 = T2 = wL 1 + L2
