SEMESTER-9, SECTION-B
The humanistic therapy describes personality as an ongoing process
motivated by the need for relative integration, guided by
intentionality, choice, values and one’s ever expanding conscious
awareness. They emphasize upon the individualized qualities of optimal
wellbeing, use of creative potential and relational conditions that
encourage such qualities and lead to a healthy development.
Humanistic psychologists also focus on and try to understand the lived
experiences of individuals as active participants of their respective
sociocultural and eco-psycho-spiritual context.
It opposes the existing reductionist approaches and emphasizes upon
the complete picture of the individual and within the context of their
life.
With respect to the case of the young Muslim girl who recently
shifted to The United States of America along with her conservative
family, there are a number of ways in which this big change can affect
her, be it in the form of a cultural shock to the perceived sense of
freedom, adjustment would require patience and regular effects.

According to the humanistic viewpoint, the consequences she might

experience may be:
● A discrepancy between her role self, real self and ideal self. Since,
she comes from a conservative background where girls are
considered ideal when they fulfill a particular set of gender roles
(like household chores are a woman’s job, family-oriented,
dependent upon the men, childbearing machines, etc). But in
America, a woman is independent and has a job, pays her own bills
and takes complete responsibility. She may experience a conflict
between her existing role self and the novel ideal self.
● According the hierarchy of needs theory, she will have to start
fulfilling her basic needs from physiological and safety, specifically
because she is a Muslim immigrant in the US which is a highly
racist and islamophobic country. Then, moving up the hierarchy to
more important needs such as belongingness and love where she
will have to establish new relationships in a foreign country, Also,
this point must be considered that the client studied in an all girls
school and would have to interact with the opposite sex. Then, she
would have to climb up the ladder and fulfill her esteem needs in
order to achieve self-actualisation.
● The concept of free will and choice is also highly relevant because
at every moment the client would come across a choice. She could
choose to follow her existing values and roles or adapt to the needs
of her new environment and work towards becoming independent.
She can choose to interact with the opposite sex and build
relationships.
● The humanistic perspective also indicates towards the concept of
intentionality. If the client has the intention to adjust and
reconstruct her existing beliefs and values, she will be able to
adjust better and improve her overall wellbeing,
