Cantiver Beam Design

The document describes the design of two cantilever beams. For beam CB1, which has a 1.2m span and total load of 15kN/m, the required steel area is calculated as 220.39mm^2 and provided as 710mm^2. Beam CB2 has a 1.5m span and total load of 15kN/m. Its required steel area is 412.18mm^2 and provided as 1256.6mm^2. Both beams pass checks for shear capacity and deflection.

DESIGN OF CANTILEVER BEAM CB1

Span of beam( l ) = 1.2 m

Loads on beam
Section assumed
B = 200 mm
D 600 mm
Self wt.of beam = 3 kn/m effective depth ( d 565 mm
Wall load = 1 kn/m
Slab load 1 = 6 kn/m 15 kn
Slab load 2 = 5 kn/m 15 kn/m
Total U.D.L ( W ) = 15 kn/m

Point load ( P ) = 15 kn
1.2 m

Maximum bending moment (M)= W*l2/2+Pl = 28.8 kn m

Mu = M * 1.5 = 43.2 kn m
To find area of steel required (Ast)req
K = Mu / ( Bd2fcu ) = 0.03383194
Where (fcu ) is the characteristic strength of concrete = 20 N/mm 2 , from IS 456 2000 Table 2 pg.16
Lever arm
Z = d ( 0.5+(0.25 - (K / 0.9)1/2 = 0.9608784647 * d mm
since the lever arm is limited to 0.95 d
Z = 0.95 * d mm = 542.89633254 mm
(Ast)req = Mu / 0.87 fy Z = 220.39385918 mm2
Where fy is charateristic strength of steel = 415 N/mm 2 , from IS 456 2000

Provide : 2 16 2 14 in top
Hence Ast(prov) = 710 mm2
2 16 0 0 in bottom

Check for Shear :-

Max S.F ( Vu ) = 1.5((wl)+P)) = 49.5 Kn

hence (Vu) = 49.5 KN , 100As/b.d = Pt = 0.62832 %

from IS 456-1978 the design shear strength(Table 61) Tc = 0.61 , Tcb.d 68.93 kN
(Vu-Tcb.d)/d = -0.3439 KN/cm
for the above value for sp acing of two leg ed vertical strrups is taken from ,Table 62 , IS 456-1978
Hence Provide : Y 8 @ 12 C/C

Check for Deflection : -

Max def ( De ) = (W14/8EI)+(P13/3EI) 0.157701636 where ,

E = 5700*(fcu)0.5 = 25491.17
l / 500 2.4 I=BD3/12 3.6E+09
since De < l / 500 ,
the beam is SAFE against deflection

hence (Vu) = 78.75 KN , 100As/b.d = Pt = 0.94484 %

from IS 456-1978 the design shear strength(Table 61) Tc = 0.61 , Tcb.d 81.13 kN
(Vu-Tcb.d)/d = -0.0358 KN/cm
for the above value for sp acing of two leg ed vertical strrups is taken from ,Table 62 , IS 456-1978
