Dall’altra parte, dove prima c’era il mare,


ora c’è un gigantesco deserto e tutte le navi
rimangono immobili appoggiate sul fondo
asciutto. Naturalmente pescatori, palombari,
marinai, bagnini e comuni bagnanti non
trovano entusiasmante la faccenda. Ma il re è
il re, comanda lui.
E poi si tratta di sudditi. Lo capiscono al volo
che perdere il mare è brutto, perdere la testa
è peggio.

Once upon a time there was a mountain . And on that mountain was a castle . And in that castle lived a
king and a princess . One morning, Princess Petunia said to her father, “Dad, see that sea over there?
I want it here!” So, King Romualdo had the sea moved to the mountain!

a prendere il volo dalla collina di Fiesole. Ma cadde.
Studiai, allora, la caduta delle foglie e dei pesi
e il movimento dell’aria. Fu così che ho disegnato le ali
dell’ornitottero e un’elica a vite che, se ben fatta di tela
di lino, poteva sollevarsi da terra e volare in alto.
Ma c’erano anche le colline e pensai: potrei lanciarmi a valle,
come fanno i rapaci. Ma non avevo ali e, dunque, immaginai

Non c’era altro da fare e così il giorno dopo si misero in marcia. Salutando la sentinella
Dorothy chiese: “Qual è la strada che porta dalla Malvagia Strega dell’Ovest?”
“Non c’è strada” fu la risposta della sentinella, “in quella direzione non ci vuole andare mai nes-
suno.” “E allora come facciamo a trovarla?” “Voi andate verso Ovest e vedrete che sarà
la Strega a trovare voi e a farvi suoi schiavi.”
Cammina e cammina si trovarono in una terra sempre più brulla e disabitata, finché fu davve-
ro la Strega a trovarli. Quando li vide con il suo unico occhio, potente come un telescopio,
soffiò in un fischietto d’argento che portava appeso al collo e subito un branco di grandi
lupi arrivò di corsa. “Andate da quelli lì” disse la Strega, “e fateli a pezzetti.” E i lupi corsero
all’attacco. Allora il Boscaiolo disse: “Ci penso io. Riparatevi dietro le mie spalle.”
Afferrò la sua scure e a ogni lupo che sopraggiungeva mozzava il capo in un sol colpo.
Quaranta erano i lupi e a quaranta tagliò la testa.
La Strega Malvagia si accorse che i suoi lupi erano stati sconfitti e più furiosa di prima chia-
mò a raccolta i corvi: “Volate dagli stranieri e fateli a pezzi!” ordinò al Re dei corvi.
E i corvi, tanti da oscurare il cielo, volarono contro i nostri amici.

on fu proprio l’indomani. L’occasione si fece aspettare
un po’. Un camion entrava passando rumorosamente
sotto l’insegna del cancello, uomini sudati scaricava-
no o caricavano; la mamma poi era quasi sempre in casa.
Ma quando infine venne, quel domani, fu un nitido oggi, rimasto
poi per sempre nel ricordo come un ritaglio di presente, più che
un’immagine del passato.
È di pomeriggio, un po’ sul tardi. Il sole, ritirando-
si, tocca ancora di sbieco la grondaia del tetto. La
mamma è andata alle botteghe per un supplemen-
to di spesa serale, i padroni sono nello studio, che guar-
da sulla strada. Il sogno audace di se stessa che si arrampi-
ca sull’albero, dai primi rami fino alla vetta, ha avuto tempo
di radicarsi a fondo nel cuore della bambina, che continua a rip-
ensarci. I suoi sogni a occhi aperti sono tutti di questo genere,
molto semplici, ma tenaci. Decidendosi di botto, esce nel cortile
deserto.
È pieno di un chiasso di uccellini che non si vedono, ma che
danno alla chioma dell’albero scosse più brevi e brusche di
quelle del vento. Perché c’è un po’ di vento: guardando in su
Luisina vede dondolare i rami gonfi di foglie, avanti e indietro.
La vista di quel movimento le scava nel petto uno strano vuoto.
Ma non le è possibile rinunciare all’impresa. È tutto deciso da
prima, come già avvenuto.

La pianta venne su bellissima.

lastre di pietra: il più noto è Stonehenge, in Inghilterra, edificato circa
nel 2000 a. C. Lì, da un masso al centro di due cerchi di lastre che pesano
ognuna dalle 26 alle 40 tonnellate, si può osservare il punto da cui sorge
il sole all’inizio dell’estate. Secondo alcune leggende l’osservatorio
sarebbe stato creato con pietroni portati dall’Irlanda dal Mago Merlino.

Non sempre e non ovunque si può


andare in giro con addosso quel
che si vuole. Ad esempio, nell’Europa
medievale seguire la moda è considerato
immorale, in quanto provoca tentazione
e peccato. Così le autorità civili
e religiose fissano precise regole
sull’abbigliamento, chiamate “Leggi
suntuarie”: dal Trecento al Seicento
in Italia se ne contano 220, in Francia
un centinaio, in Germania 5.000.

Queste leggi impongono limiti alle spese per oggetti di moda


e cerimonie, nonché all’importazione di stoffe e abiti di lusso dall’estero.
Così a Firenze nel 1300 gli Ufficiali delle Donne si appostano nelle piazze
e sui ponti, pronti a multare le donne (ma anche gli uomini) che portano
colletti di pizzo troppo lunghi, ricami e gioielli.

Le imposizioni statali sul vestiario continuano anche nei secoli seguenti:


nel 1892 in Francia sarà finalmente permesso alle donne di indossare
i pantaloni, ma solo quando vanno in bicicletta. Anche la minigonna
non ha vita facile, quando appare nel 1963: all’inizio è vietata per legge
nei Paesi Bassi, oggi è proibita in molti paesi islamici e mal tollerata
anche in un paese buddista come lo Sri Lanka. Infine, in molti stati
di religione musulmana per le donne è obbligatorio portare il velo
quando escono di casa.
