EE114-1 Homework 4

The function of a fiber optic system is to transfer large amounts of data, such as videos and sounds, over long or short distances at high speeds. There are several types of wireless communication systems used in buildings. Distributed antenna systems distribute radio signals from a central point to antennas throughout a building. Repeaters and bi-directional amplifiers boost cellular signals by rebroadcasting them within a building. Small cells are low-powered nodes that increase coverage over short ranges. Electrical equipment like motors and generators can negatively affect telecommunication signals by emitting electromagnetic interference that disrupts signals. Fluorescent and HID lighting also produce electromagnetic interference through their electronic ballasts that can cause static on communication signals.

EE114-1 Homework 4

1. Describe the function of a fiber optic system.

The function of fiber optic system is ideal for transferring huge data to either long distances or locally. It
can transmit large data at a fast speed within the system that is beneficial for its users. It utilizes light
wave technology in transmitting data such as sound, videos, etc. Fiber optic system is also used in a large
scale such as transmitting telephone signals, cable signal, and for internet.

2. Describe types of wireless communications used in buildings.

Distributed Antenna Systems (DAS) – It distributes radio frequency signals from a center point to
different antennas placed in the building. The proper placement of the antennas is important for the
building to have a good coverage of signal. Distributed Antenna Systems or DAS are commonly used in
huge spaces such as outdoor locations, large buildings, airports, stadiums, and other public spaces. DAS
is also capable of hosting huge numbers of devices and frequencies.

Repeaters and Bi-Directional Amplifiers (BDAs) – It boosts the cellular signal by rebroadcasting the signal
it gets from the cell site to the building it is placed. Cell signal operators must approve the usage of BDAs
because it can cause complications with the microcellular network. Multiple BDAs must also be used in
large spaces for it to have good signal all throughout the location.

Small Cells – It is a general term used for a wide variety of low-powered radio access nodes. They are
designed to increase coverage and capacity in only a short range and they are only capable of hosting
limited number of users. The range of small cells usually varies between 10 meters to several hundred
meters. They are also commonly used in indoor locations.

3. How does electrical equipment (e.g., motors, generators, and so on) affect telecommunication
signals?

Electrical equipment affects telecommunication signals negatively because they emit electromagnetic
interference or EMI that can modify the signal in a disruptive manner. Electrical equipment can cause
disruption to the telecommunication signal if they are placed withing the channel of the source of the
signal and the receiver. Manufacturing electrical equipment are now being regulated so that they can be
designed properly to reduce electrical interference. However, there are some electrical equipment such
as lighting equipment, and industrial electrical gear that are not covered in the said regulation and they
can cause disruption in telecommunication signals. The basic types of electrical interference that can
affect telecommunication signals are the noise generated by the electrical equipment, electrical devices
such as computers, and interference from lighting source.

4. How does fluorescent and HID lighting affect telecommunication signals?

HID lighting or high-intensity discharge lighting produces light with the use of an electric arc. These
electric arcs are produced using electronic ballast which may cause the electro magnetic interference
when placed near the channel or path of telecommunication signals. The electromagnetic interference
produced by the HID lighting can disrupt and cause static on telecommunication signals.
5. Make a research of a residence with an advanced home wiring system. Make a sketch of the
system and identify chief components of and their locations in the system.

The chief components of the home wiring system are:

1. Home Networking – It is located in the home office and in the bedroom.
2. Security / Fire – It is located in all the rooms except the home office, bedroom, and living room.
3. Home Networking Center – It is located in the entrance of the house.
4. Central Vacuum – It is located in the dining room, living room, home office, and bedroom where it is
most used.
5. Home Network – It is located in the kitchen, living room, home office, and bedroom where it is
commonly used.
6. Whole House Audio – It is located in the kitchen, dining room, and hallway.
7. Intercom – It is located in the kitchen, entrance, and hallway.
8. Surveillance Camera – It is located in the entrance and in the utility room.
9. Home Theater – It is located in the living room.
10. Theater Display – It is located in the living room and in the bedroom.
