Executive Summery

Information Technology (IT) has different characteristics that we can define in three
dimensions such as time dimension, content dimension and form dimension. IT plays an
important role in our day to day life in different fields like business, education, health care,
security etc. We usually don’t realize how much dependent we are on IT. IT makes our lives
easier but the people who develop and run the IT sector means the IT professionals face
several challenges during working in this field. They face challenges like extreme workload,
cyber security, career growth etc. Managers of business organizations also face challenges
like speed and flexibility requirements, ethical and career challenges etc. If we talk about
their issues, follow some tips and provide them some essentials they need to grow their
career, IT sector can build up efficiently and take us to a completely digitalized modern
world.

Characteristics of IT

The characteristics of IT are basically the features or qualities of IT. The characteristics of IT
are given below in a three dimensional form:

Why Information Technology is needed?

Now-a-days, Information Technology (IT) plays a vital role in different fields of our day to
day life. Sometimes, we do not even realize how IT is simplifying our lives.

Some major fields are given below where IT is needed-

 IT in Business: The world of business has changed a lot after using IT. Business
farms and companies have started to appoint IT experts to ensure that their
departments such as finance, security, manufacturing, human resources run smoothly
and to increase their competitive advantages in global markets. IT allows businesses
to maintain balance between supply and customer demand. IT also improves the
effectiveness and efficiency of business processes, managerial decision making and
workgroup collaboration.

 IT in Education: In this modern world, the way of giving education has changed a lot
because of using IT. There are so many new ways like using projectors in a class,
using Google classroom or attending online classes from anywhere. The teachers and
students just need a computer or tablet or smart phone and internet connection to
access education. A working student can easily join the classes or submit assignments
on Google classroom during a break. IT is also helping to decrease the number of
dropouts who could not complete studies because of having busy working schedule
before.

 IT in Healthcare: Healthcare has improved a lot after utilizing IT in this field.

Doctors are getting patient’s previous records online and prescribing treatments
online. That’s why, the time wasted for paperwork before is saving now and doctors
can treat more patients. Moreover, the patient’s medical information is more secure as
the prescriptions are sent digitally. Doctors are also using technologies like Magnetic
Resonance Imaging (MRI) and Computerized Axial Tomography (CAT) to diagnose
patients. These technologies provide clear images of body parts that show if there is
any dissimilarity that cannot be found with other medical tests.

 IT in Security: IT keeps all the online transactions safe using encryption and
password. IT also hides one’s personal digital information until his permission.1

Challenges of IT

1. Professional Challenges of IT:

 They face a huge amount of work demand and it’s hard for them to complete
all the works in time.
 Cyber security is a big issue for the IT professionals. They have to face
hackers often who try to destroy their work or copy it.
 IT professionals can face problems during work if they have gaps in their IT
skills.
 Now-a-days IT professionals and departments are failing behind to cope up
with the rapid digital transformations.
 Though Cloud computing opportunities are remarkable, the expertise in this
field is not enough.
 Half of the IT professionals are struggling in the area of recruitment.
 In most of the companies, they do not get the budget that is needed for a
specific work.
 Sometimes they do not get proper training and support from the authorization
they work for.
 They often struggle to manage the huge amount of data.
 To decrease the workload organizations are trying to automate critical systems
but hackers are taking this as an opportunity to execute their attacks.2

2. Managerial Challenges of IT:

 Speed and flexibility requirements of product development, manufacturing

and delivery cycles.
 Reengineering and cross functional integration of business processes using IT.
 Integration of e-business and e-commerce into the organizations strategies,
processes, structure and culture.
 Ethical challenges such as infringements on privacy, inaccurate information,
collusion, consumer boycotts, work stoppages etc.
 Career challenges as economic downturns have affected all job sectors,
including IT.

Recommendations

1. We should increase the use of IT in different fields such as Business, education,

healthcare, finance, security etc to improve our lifestyle.
2. People should ignore myths about the IT sectors like IT professionals are computer
geeks who live in cubicle or there are no job for IT professionals and come in this
profession to decrease the workload from others.
3. We should always be aware of the cyber security.
4. One should work on his IT skills before entering the IT sector.
5. Organizations should provide training sessions on cloud computing, data
management, critical thinking etc for the IT professionals.
6. Organizations should go back from the automation system on important projects so
that the hackers are not able to attack badly.

Conclusion

Information Technology (IT) is playing an important role in this modern world. People are
using IT in different fields like business, education, healthcare etc without realizing how their
life could be without IT. IT is important but there are also some challenges for the IT
professionals who develop and run this sector and some managerial challenges during the use
of IT in business sector. But we can overcome the challenges by following some tricks and
use IT more smoothly to enter a digitalized world.
