5.2.3 PLET drawing with its equipment

This is the PLET 20”. The two others are the same but with different length, width, height and
adapted equipment.

5.2.4 PLET installation equipments

• The deployment table and the clamping frame (see picture on page 7)
The PLET is installed with the use of a specifically designed deployment table. Supported by this
table, the PLET is presented above the recovered pipe at the catenary angle to allow welding
between PLET pup piece and the pipe, which is retained in a friction clamp on the hangoff
platform.
The hangoff platform and outrigger were installed on the aft starboard deck

• The outrigger (see picture on page 7)

The outrigger was existing on the starboard side deck. It has been modified with the addition of skid
beams and reinforcement to receive the deployment table.

• Winches (See deck layout on page 8)

Extra winches have been used for the installation:
- One diesel winch Skagit RB90 with double drums
- One hydraulic winch Jimecal 20t located onto the main line roof
- Two Victoria winches
- 2 Air winches 10t (external renting)

• Rigging (see picture on page 9)

To complete the whole rigging of the PLET, various rigging arrangement were required.
- For the PLET lifting and upending
- For the main hook offset control
- For the PLET rotation control
- For the deployment table movements

• Stabilising clump weight (see picture on page 9)

It is utilised to avoid any PLET rotation and to lower the high of the centre of gravity during their
deployment. For the four PLET two stabilising clump weight are required:
- one of 6tons for the two 10” PLET consisting of one 6T Bruce anchor
- one of 10tons for the 16” and the 20” PLET consisting of one 6T Bruce anchor and 4T chain.

• Jacks (see 7.2 for characteristics and attachment 1 for layout)

10 hydraulic jacks were required for the deployment table articulation:
- 2 for the table angle
- 2 to align the PLET pup piece and the pipe
- 2 for the table precise settings longitudinally(final horizontal lining up)
- 4 for the table precise settings transversally

5.2.6 PLET installation sequence

The installation sequence can be summarized as follows:

- PLET is lifted, upended and positioned onto the deployment table.
- Pipeline is recovered using the clyde main hook and set onto Polaris starboard side outrigger.
- Pipe extremity is secured, cut and beveled.
- Table is moved to present PLET pup piece above recovered pipe.
- Pipeline extremity is welded to the PLET pup piece and Gamma radiography NDT performed.
- PLET is laid down using the main crane.

5.3 General installation constraints

5.3.1 PLET location

Two sites:
- At CPT (390m depth) for 20”, 16” and one 10”. The TBT section of CPT platform has already
been installed.

- At Kuito FPSO (384m depth) for the 10”. The PLET is located within the FPSO mooring
pattern, which dictates a specific approach for Polaris.
At both sites the seabed is flat and horizontal for PLET landing.

5.3.2 Required tolerances on targets

10"@ FPSO @CPT
Tolerances +/- 5m +/- 5m +/- 5m +/- 5m
longitudinal longitudinal longitudinal longitudinal
+/- 3m lateral +/- 1.5m lateral +/- 1.5m lateral +/- 3m lateral
Pipe Heading 327.10 266.20 269.20 308.3

5.3.3 Weather constraint

During the PLET horizontal lifting and upending operations, the POLARIS is orientated into the
swell. During the time that the pipe is inserted in the outrigger, the Polaris must be perpendicular to
the pipeline catenary plane. So during these operations, including the installation of the pipe in the
outrigger and the overboarding of the PLET, the barge is not aligned to the swell. These phases of
work are the limited by prevailing weather conditions.

The maximum calculated sea state for the PLET installation operation is Hs = 1.5m with a
period of 14sec.

7.5 Downtimes analysis

- First downtime (08h45) was mechanical and due to onboard winch problems. Twice with the
clyde winch Bezemer during pipeline recovery of both 10” and one with skagit RB90 winch
during 20” PLET deployment. Refer to Chief engineer report on breakdown, contained in
attachment 2.

- Second downtime cause was due to weather (02h15). Once during 10” PLET deployment and
once during 20” PLET connection.

- Third downtime cause was preparation (02h00): during 16” PLET preparation we had to wait
for fabrication of a ROV shackle. This ROV shackle was used to recover the 20” pipeline
directly after 16” PLET laydown and to allow for ROV disconnection in case of ROV wire
cutter failure.

PLET Installation

9 LESSONS LEARNT
9.1 Offshore operations
Hereafter are presented relevant elements and modifications in procedure took during PLET
installation. It has been classified by type of operation.

9.1.1 Pipeline recovery

• Pipeline end is recovered to surface and secured on the Seaway Polaris outrigger before its
associated PLET is transferred to the deployment table. This is to avoid PLET contact with
clyde hook during pipeline connection into clamping frame.

• 24m sling wire, diameter 64mm mentioned in drawing B-CAB-BEB-DPP-57-1522 “X-PLET

Recovery Rigging” has been reduced to 12m for pipeline recovery. As above, this sling wire of
24m could also be reduced to 6m for pipeline and PLET deployment. This is to reduce
movement of clyde hook and to have a better hook control. Indeed it is necessary not to slack
the Clyde hook no. 3 when the pipeline is entering inside the outrigger before to close the
clamp. Small tension shall be kept all the time during this operation

• For pipeline end recovery, the connection of the Skagit RB90 to the pre-installed rigging on the
upper hang-off collar is performed by the Seaway Polaris crew in Zodiac via the “cablette à
chaîne” of the Clyde crane (instead of ROV at 50m depth depending on weather).

• The 2 tons clump weight connected to the Clyde hook no. 3 to avoid hook rotation was used
only for the first pipeline recovery. This operation complicated the lowering of the Clyde hook
to the pipeline ends for the recovery and did not appear as useful. It shall be noted that when the
main hook is reeved in 2x4 falls with Bezemer winch no hook rotation occurs.

• Barge heading can be slightly modified from its theoretical ones (if necessary to limit rolling)
when pipeline is inside the clamping frame. Range angle depends on the type of pipeline and
has to be estimated by pipeline engineering department. For instance, for the first 10” we
modified the barge heading by 15° in order to be more face to swell. In the future, this study
should be done in advance.

9.1.2 PLET preparation

• Before the upending, PLET rigging must be adjusted to get a PLET angle higher than the ones
of the deployment table. If not, PLET can not slide inside table supports when deployed without
an exterior help to adjust its contact with the table.

Ver. 2.0 Seaway Polaris Operations Report – Benguela Belize – Page 24 of 30
PLET Installation

• ROV shackle shall be used for PLET laydown rigging as a contingency plan in case of ROV
wire cutter tool failure.

9.1.3 PLET deployment

• Do not use nylon slings for tugger lines if connected to a constant tension winch such as Jimecal
winch. It disrupts the proper function of constant winch.

• Use of Limburg to connect the cable for pipeline recovery: NOT TO BE DONE AGAIN. It is
better to bring the cable with the “cablette à chaine” and to connect it by zodiac.

• The deck crew in zodiac performs tugger lines disconnection when the PLET is stabilized in the
water instead of ROV.

• Upper drum of Skagit RB90 is used for the connection of the clump weight with the PLET.

• For LBL transponder only, installation for pipeline and PLET deployment is performed at a
water depth greater than 50 meters. Preferably when the PLET has an angle around 45°.

9.1.4 DP settings

• During 16” and 20” recovery, DP operators faced problems to keep the barge into position. As
the cable tension was not strictly vertical, a horizontal tension was generated. This added an
external force, disruptive for the barge position, that had to be modelled in the DP. In the future,
in lay tables, it will be necessary to provide the horizontal tension for each step to allow DP
operator to input it into the DP software.

9.2 General

• PLET engineering was well prepared. During installation phases, none had to complain about
PLET design and PLET installation procedure.

• The operation to recover the pipe and to deploy the PLET with the hook n°3 appeared as very
efficient and more simple than with A&R winch cable which would have required a subsea load
transfer.

DESCRIPTION OF FAULT: (as much detail as possible)
On Monday 21th february 2005, at around 02:00pm, lowering hook #3 on deck to install rigging for first Plet 10”
KUITO 01, Bezemer winches stopped due to loss of electric power on PLC cards in starboard container pannel,

REPAIRS CARRIED OUT: (as much detail as possible)

reset the alarm & restart, winches started again, we’ve got 3 times the same alarm in ½ hour,
checked batteries: ok,
checked electric connections in PLC pannel & on winches: found one solenoid connector rusty with one broken
pin, replaced this solenoid (this solenoid is supply by the port container), checked insulation of PLC I/O wires,
nothing abnormal was found,
06:40pm, started again, no more alarm, tested winches during 1 hour, everything looks good, the fault is
intermittent,
07:40pm, crane ready for Plet operations

PREVENTATIVE RECOMMENDATIONS:
to check all electric connections,
the 24VDC coming from batteries has the – wire to the ground, any insulation drop on a +24VDC wire could
create a leakage current with a drop of the 24VDC supply, in that case a drop of the PLC output card supply
tension. I recommend to install new 24VDC stabilized power supply fed by UPS with – wire isolated from the
ground.
If the failure caused down-time, please state length of time 6 hours

MODIFICATIONS IN PROCEDURES

Date : 23/02/2005

1. Pipeline end will be recovered to surface and secured on the Seaway Polaris
outrigger before its associated PLET will be transferred to the deployment table.

2. 24m sling wire, diameter 64mm mentioned in drawing B-CAB-BEB-DPP-57-

1522 “X-PLET Recovery Rigging” has been reduced to 12m for pipeline
recovery. As above, this sling wire of 24m could also be reduced to 6m for
pipeline and PLET deployment.

3. For pipeline end recovery, the connection of the Skagit RB90 to the pre-installed
rigging on the upper hang-off collar will be performed by the Seaway Polaris crew
in Zodiac via the “cablette à chaîne” of the Clyde crane.

4. The 2 tonnes clump weight connected to the Clyde hook no. 3 will not be used
anymore. This operation complicates the lowering of the Clyde hook to the
pipeline ends for the recovery.

5. Skagit RB90 will be used for the connection of the clump weight with the PLET.

6. ROV shackle may be used in the pipeline and PLET laydown rigging as a
contingency plan.

7. Transponder installation for pipeline and PLET deployment will be performed at a

water depth greater than 50 metres.

8. Disconnection of the Jimecal winch rigging wire from the PLET during first
laydown steps will be performed from Seaway Polaris deck.

9. Do not slack the Clyde hook no. 3 when the pipeline is entered inside the
outrigger before to close the clamp. Small tension shall be kept all the time during
this operation.
