Binomial Distributions & Problems

The document defines the binomial distribution as a probability distribution that describes experiments with a fixed number of trials (n), two possible outcomes (success or failure), and a constant probability of success (p) for each trial. The key properties are: 1) The probability of x successes in n trials is calculated using the binomial probability mass function. 2) The mean (expected value) of the distribution is np. 3) The variance of the distribution is npq, where q is the probability of failure, 1 - p. The document provides examples of binomial probability problems involving calculating probabilities of certain numbers of successes based on the number of trials and probability of success for each trial.

BINOMIAL DISTRIBUTION

Definition:
A binomial experiment is a probability experiment that satisfies the following conditions:
➢ The experiment is repeated for a fixed number of trials, where each trial is independent
of the other trials.
➢ There are only two possible outcomes of interest for each trial. The outcomes can be
classified as a success 𝑺 or as a failure 𝑭.
➢ The probability of a success 𝑷(𝑺) is the same for each trial.
➢ The random variable X counts the number of successful trials.

Notations:
❖ 𝑛 – number trials/experiment
❖ 𝑝 = 𝑃(𝑆) – probability of success per trial
❖ 𝑞 = 𝑃(𝐹) – probability of failure per trial
❖ 𝑋 = 𝑥 – The random variable represents a count of the number of successes in n trials:
𝑥 = 0, 1, 2, 3, . . . , 𝑛.

Probability Mass Function (PMF)

𝑛 𝑛!
𝑃(𝑋 = 𝑥) = ( ) 𝑝 𝑥 𝑞 𝑛−𝑥 = 𝑝 𝑥 𝑞𝑛−𝑥
𝑥 𝑥! (𝑛 − 𝑥)!

Mean

𝜇 = 𝑛𝑝

Variance

𝜎 2 = 𝑛𝑝𝑞

Standard Deviation

𝜎 = √𝑛𝑝𝑞

find the probability of him winning at least one competition.
6.) If a coin is tossed thrice, find the probability of a getting head at least two times.
7.) If only 5 percent kids can secure A grade in a paper, find the probability of at most 2 out of 10
kids getting A grade in that paper.
8.) A group of people gathered for a small party. Fifteen percent of them are left-handed, find the
probability that if 6 people are chosen at random, all of them are left handed.
9.) The chance that any one telephone line is busy at a given moment of time is 0.01. What is the
chance that out of 5 telephone lines, less than 3 lines are busy?
10.) When an unbiased coin is tossed eight times what is the probability of obtaining
(a) less than 4 heads?
(b) more than five heads?
11.) A biased die is thrown thirty times and the number of sixes seen is eight. If the die is thrown a
further twelve times find
(a) the probability that a six will occur exactly twice
(b) the expected number of sixes
(c) the variance of the number of sixes
12.) A random variable 𝑋 is binomially distributed with mean 6 and variance 4.2. Find 𝑃 (𝑋 ≤ 2).

one correct per question. If 𝑋 is 'the number of questions answered correctly' give
(a) the mean of 𝑋
(b) the variance of 𝑋
(c) the probability that a student will achieve a pass mark of 10 or more purely by guessing
14.) A crossword puzzle is published in The Times each day of the week, except Sunday. A man is
able to complete, on average, 8 out of 10 of the crossword puzzles.
(a) Find the expected value and the standard deviation of the number of completed crosswords
in a given week.
(b) What is the probability that he will complete at least 5 in a given week?

are to be selected at random each day. Each bolt will be selected and replaced in the set of bolts
which have been produced on that day.
(a) What is the probability that, in any one sample, two bolts or less will be faulty?
(b) What are the expected value and the variance of the number of bolts in a sample which will
be faulty?
