Colloquium, Symposium
Colloquium, Symposium
According to me the definition, meaning and format of colloquium differs from professors to
professors and with respect to persons who are going to be a part of colloquium. For some
colloquium is an informal gathering. For some it is an informal discussion and for some it is an
academic conference and for some it is an informal seminar. BUT we can conclude it as a
gathering of academics in order to discuss a topic and interact with one another in the spirit of
sharing information and each other’s perspective on a particular topic.
Usually this is led by different lecturer and on a different topic at each meeting where you’ll
spend a couple of days listening to lectures with a group of people who all know about the
particular subject.
----demonstrate knowledge
----discuss
----express and educated opinion on the present condition and future contexts.
WHAT IS SYMPOSIUM?
The main difference between colloquium and symposium is that colloquium has more formal
and academic setting whereas symposium is gathering which is informal and social in nature,
where a group of speakers discuss a topic usually before an audience for 10-20 minutes and then
the speech is followed by a questions and comments from audience. It is typically completed in
a single day.
According to me, COLLOQUIUM can be used as an effective method for students who are
writing academic papers and presentations because they will be hearing from a lot of people and
will get a lot of ideas. For schools and college students, I think it won’t be that effective in a long
run because it will be difficult for them to understand what is being discussed as the academics
involved in discussion are very much experienced and it will also be time consuming. But few
easy topics can be discussed along with the handouts to make them understand. Also for the
administrators it won’t be cost effective, because a lot of preparation and planning is required for
colloquium.
SYMPOSIUM can be used as an effective pedagogy tool because it is used to achieve higher
cognitive and effective objectives. It serves as an excellent method for informing audience,
taking their opinions and preparing them for arriving at a particular topic or issue. It can boost up
students abilities to speak in the group. It develops a sense of cooperation and adjustment. One
can develop deeper insight into the topic. But it also has some disadvantages:
PANEL DISCUSSION is a discussion in which a few persons carry out a conversation in front
of an audience to provide new information and facts. According to me panel discussion can be
used as a pedagogy tool as it can help students to think critically. But it cannot be effective
because it requires more time for planning and organizing. The discussion might be vague if the
panelists don’t have experience. We as a learner don’t have experience, so it can pose a problem.
