7 Principles For Building Better Cities

Peter Calthorpe outlines 7 principles for building better cities: (1) Preserve natural environments and agriculture, (2) Encourage mixed populations with mixed incomes and land uses, (3) Plan cities for pedestrians, not just vehicles, (4) Promote bicycles as efficient transportation to reduce pollution, (5) Create connected street networks with multiple routes, (6) Invest in public transit development over private vehicles, and (7) Understand population density to focus transit development accordingly. The document then discusses applying these principles in the context of urban planning in India, noting both existing practices that align with the principles and areas where Indian cities could improve.

7 PRINCIPLES FOR BUILDING

BETTER CITIES
PETER CALTHORPE

AMRUTHA K

INTRODUCTION
Urbanization is the increase in the proportion of people living in towns and cities.Urbanization
occurs because people move from rural areas to urban areas. Urbanization is not only an increase in
the population but also includes, social, economic and psychological changes that occurs in the
city. There is a huge increase in the population now and it will double in the future. At the same time it
is necessary to identify the factors that determine the climate change in the urban areas. As a result of
climate change in urban areas, more and more frequently unpredictable and adverse consequences
occur: strong instability of soils, hot summers, falling water tables, changes in the quality of air,
reduced water supply, coastal erosion etc. So we have to understand both the climate conditions and
the population growth for building better cities.

Peter Calthorpe explains about some points that we should remember when planning a city:

SPRAWL: It is the unrestricted growth of many urban areas without any plannings. Peter says
that it will segregate people by the economic level of the person, land used by him etc. It also seoerate
people from the nature. In India we have a tendency of creating spaces for personal needs without
considering the urban scale planning.
OPEN SPACES: He tells the importance of having open spaces so that we get a good
platform for social interaction etc. In India we give great importance for open spaces.
TOD : He explains that city should be developed in a way that the commercial, residential and
other important facilities should be within a walkable distance. But in India we lack this development in
many cities. People here uses more of private vehicles to connect with the different parts of the city. Most
of the cities here are built for the vehicle and avoided the pedestrians.
SUPERBLOCKS: Blocks that would have 5,000 units in them. In this case people are not aware
of their neighbour or any other people in the same building. But in India people are not much interested in
this type of settlements. They like interacting with people and neighbors.

7 PRINCIPLES OF PETER CALTHORPE IN INDIAN CONTEXT

Ø Preservation of natural environment, history and agriculture.
India has a most bio-diverse Eco zone (desert, mountains, highlands etc ). We have many
environmental laws to protect them. Cities are being built considering the charecteristic of the
place and the land. But in some places the agriculture areas are not protected. It is filled up and
buildings are being constructed. Even though 60% land is given for the agriculture in india. We
try to implement old tecniques in the construction. And we give great importance to the history
and heritage.
Ø Mixed population.
Mixed population indicates mixed incomes, mixed age groups as well as mixed-land use.
We have to build city considering the mix use pattern. People from all types of background
should be given importance and should have a place in the city like anyother people. In India we
have some cities planned in such manner.
Ø Walk
City should be planned not only for vehicles, we have to give importance to the pedestrains too. In India
most of the cities are planned giving importance to the vehicles. Very less spaces are given for the
pedestrains and even that spaces are occupied by the vehicles for parking.
Ø Bike
Bike is the most efficient means of transportation which controls the pollution too. But in India people are
not using bikes in a great manner. Inorder to control the pollution we have to shift the transportation to
bikes and the public transportation methods.
Ø Connect
It's a street network that allows many routes instead of singular routes and provides many kinds of streets
instead of just one. In India we have cities with many small street netwoks. But those areas are not well
planned. It came from the olden days.
Ø Ride
We have to invest more in transit development. More number of vehicles just increase the traffic and
pollution. So planning the city in transit oriented development will help us more. And even puplic
transportation can be made
Ø Focus
We have to understand about the density of population and should plan a transit development accordingly.
In India the population is very high when compared to the land area. So understanding of this point has to be
done while planning a city in India.
