Assessment (For PH1012 students only)

Item / Date-Time Weightage Details

Learning Catalytics 10% In-class participation - Learning Catalytics. [About 5 -10 questions will
(Week 2 13) be asked during lectures each week. Each question is 10-30 points and
students can get a total of up to 100 points each week. Students are
awarded for participation, not correctness of answers. A self-paced make-
up LC session will be available after every Monday 11:00 pm Sunday
11:59 pm the same week. Every response will only be counted once. A
maximum of 1000 points corresponding to 10% can be awarded.]
Mastering Physics 10% Weekly online Mastering Physics assignments. [We use a point system
(Week 2 13) with max 1000 points corresponding to 10%; students can get up to 100
points a week.]
Mid-term 1 15% Will confirm the mode of assessment and details in week 3 depending on
(Week 5) prevailing COVID-19 situation. All questions are compulsory. Closed-
12 Sep 2020 afternoon book assessment but a standard formula sheet will be provided.
Mid-term 2 15% Will confirm the mode of assessment and details in week 8 depending on
(Week 10) prevailing COVID-19 situation. All questions are compulsory. Closed-
24 Oct 2020 afternoon book assessment but a standard formula sheet will be provided.
Final Exam 50% Will confirm the mode of assessment and details in week 13 depending on
25 Nov 2020 prevailing COVID-19 situation. All questions are compulsory. Closed-
5:00 7:30 pm book assessment but a standard formula sheet will be provided.

If you are sick or are unable to attend the mid-terms (with official reasons), a make-up mid-term will be available
but it will be slightly more difficult as you have more time to study.

For this course, note that for the assessments Mid-term 1, Mid-term 2 and Final Exam, the levels of difficulty
are tiered so that a bell curve can be naturally obtained without any artificial intervention. Learning Catalytics
and Mastering Physics will be important for students who are weak in their foundation.

Level of difficulty Approx. Question Expected student performance Tutorial

weightage (corresponding
difficulty rating)
Basic and simple 50 55% About 60 80% of all students will do *
applications well for these questions.
Involving more 20 25% About 50 - 60% of the students should **
advanced applications do well.
and Analysis
Difficult 15 20% The top 20% of the students may get ***
these questions correct.
Very Difficult 5 10% Only the top 2% of the students may -
get these questions correct.

2
Assessment (For CE1113 / CZ1113 students only)

The CE1113 / CZ1113 has four sections and each section is 25%. You have to pass every of the four section to get an
overall pass for the course. The 4 weeks in PH1012 is the first section and a maximum of 100 marks corresponding
to 25% is allotted. The mark distribution is as follows:

Item / Date-Time Marks Details
