Physical Science Q1 - M1 PDF

1) The document discusses the formation of chemical elements, beginning with the Big Bang. It describes how lighter elements like hydrogen and helium were formed during the early universe, and how heavier elements were later created through stellar nucleosynthesis in stars. 2) Experiments and evidence are presented to support the theories of element formation. Observable phenomena like redshift and cosmic microwave background radiation provide evidence for the Big Bang. The abundances of early elements match what would be expected from Big Bang nucleosynthesis. 3) The concept of atomic number allowed scientists to systematically arrange elements in the periodic table and to synthesize new elements in the laboratory. Naturally occurring elements number 94, with 24 additional synthetic elements created artificially.

PHYSICAL SCIENCE
FIRST QUARTER
MODULE NO. 1
TOPIC: FORMATION OF ELEMENTS
I. INTRODUCTION
In your previous Grade 11 subject “Earth and Life Science”, you’ve learned the different theories about
the creation of the universe and solar system. You were able to explain the different theories and give
evidences that would support them. But have you ever wondered, asking yourself “When and how are
the elements formed in the universe?” Or “Why did the universe created the elements?
By the end of this module, you will understand on how chemical elements are formed and distributed
during the big bang explosion and formation of the stars, as well as on how the scientists synthesized
new (synthetic) elements in the laboratory.
II. COMPETENCIES/OBJECTIVES
1. Give evidence for and describe the formation of heavier elements during star formation and
evolution.
2. Explain how the concept of atomic number led to the synthesis of new elements in the
laboratory.
III. PRELIMINARIES
A. Pre-test / Vocabulary
Directions: Identify what is asked or described in each item below.
_______1. These are elements that have the same atomic number but different mass numbers.
_______2. It is a phenomenon where electromagnetic radiation from an object undergoes an
increase in wavelength.
_______3. It is a continuum of color formed when a beam of white light is dispersed so that
its component wavelengths are arranged in order.
_______4. It is not naturally occurring or rather it is artificially made by a human.
_______5. It is when an object is not filled with gas or air.
B. Activating Prior Knowledge

Diagram 1 Diagram 2
Answer the following questions:
1. In diagram 1, what will happen if the white billiard ball strikes to other billiard balls?
2. In diagram 2, what will happen to the parts of car and truck after collision?
C. Motivation
Take a look at the diagram and answer the following
questions:
1. What do you think was the appearance of the
universe before the big bang?
2. How related is the big bang to the creation of the
chemical elements?

IV. CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT
A. Presentation of the Concept
Activity 1
Directions: Watch the video on youtube- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7EpcUohHees
After watching the video, answer the following questions:
1. What elements were formed right after the big bang?
2. Make a pie graph to check the percentages of these elements.
3. After the big bang explosion, how were the elements created during stellar formation?
4. Why do you think the elements heavier than Iron cannot be created within a star?
1. Origin of the Chemical Elements
Nucleosynthesis is a thermonuclear reaction that produces a new chemical element from
another element. It is classified into three categories:
 Big bang nucleosynthesis is the formation of light elements in the universe.
 Stellar nucleosynthesis is the process by which elements are created within stars combining
the protons and neutrons together from the nuclei of lighter elements.
 Supernova nucleosynthesis involves the production of new elements during an explosion of
a massive star.
Activity 2
Experiment time!
Provide the following:
• Balloons
• Balloon pump (optional)
• Small stickers (any design)
Instructions: a. Attach small stickers randomly on the surface of the uninflated balloon.
b. Quickly inflate the balloon with a pump or your breath. Observe the stickers.
Answer the following questions:
1. Why do the stickers appear to be moving away from each other?
2. Are the stickers moving across the balloon?
3. Do the stickers themselves grow in size?
Conclusion:

2. Evidences in the formation of Chemical Elements

The following are evidences that supported the creation of the chemical elements:
1. Redshift proved that, as observed from Earth, the light emitted by faraway galaxies shifted down
toward the red end of the electromagnetic spectrum. This essentially means that the galaxies are
moving away from the Earth.
2. Cosmic microwave background radiation (CMB) is the thermal residue of the transition phase
that occurred when the hot early universe cooled enough for atoms to combine.
3. The actual abundances of hydrogen and helium deduced the spectra of the oldest stars and gas
clouds matched with what were expected from the big bang reactions. These findings agree with
the hypothesis of the big bang theory.

Activity 3
Directions: Refer to the Powerpoint Presentation on SlideShare:
https://www.slideshare.net/bRoKendaRkaNgel03/6-concept-of-atomic-no-moran-amp-atega
Answer the following questions:
1. According to the PPT, how did the scientists arrange the chemical elements in the periodic
table?
2. How did Henry Moseley fix the arrangement of the elements in the periodic table?
3. Why is it important to know the concept of atomic number?
3. Naturally occurring vs. Synthetic Elements
In the periodic table of the elements, there are 94 naturally occurring elements and 24 known
synthetic elements. These synthetic elements are not naturally occurring on Earth, thus they are
being discovered or created artificially in the laboratories. They also decay rapidly into lighter
elements.
Activity 4
Directions: Make a creative representation of the development of the synthetic elements in a
timeline.
For further understanding:
Watch: Synthetic elements- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mH2Ts1hxg9U
B. Broadening of Concept
 Why do we need to record the important events for successive years within a particular historical
period?
C. Four-pronged Integration
1. What Ignacian value do we possess if we have basis for the creation of everything?
2. What other subjects do we provide records of evidences in order to come up with a valid
conclusion?
3. Mention some current issues where we can use the timeline to trace its beginning.
4. What particular bible story shows the historical background of any biblical figure?
V. EVALUATION
1. Through an illustration: Like the formation of elements, what is in your life that you feel you need
to trace back so that you can understand better your self.
VI. ASSIGNMENT
1. How do we know if a molecule is Polar? Non-polar?
2. Why is it important to know the electronegativity for polar & non-polar molecules?
