Project Profile: How A Natural Disaster

A tornado severely damaged the Henryville Elementary and Junior/Senior High School buildings in Indiana in 2012, destroying much of the roofing systems. The tornado occurred shortly after students were dismissed for the day. Reconstruction needed to be completed quickly to reopen the schools that following fall semester. All existing roof materials were removed and replaced with a new single-ply thermoplastic polyolefin (TPO) membrane roofing system manufactured by Progressive Materials to provide superior wind and hail resistance, seamless waterproof protection, high insulation values, and low maintenance over the long term. Crews worked around the clock for 6 months to remove debris, rebuild structures, and install the new roofing system on schedule.

Project Profile (continued)

Tornado damage to the Henryville school buildings was extensive, with entire portions of the buildings demolished. The tedious
process of removing damaged sections and rebuilding occurred around the clock. Within 6 months the entire structure had been
rebuilt for the start of the next school year. The new roofing system takes advantage of cutting edge technology and is now
sustainable and energy efficient.

SOLUTION SCOPE OF WORK

The damage was so extensive that multiple teams of • Removal of the remaining roof materials.
construction crews needed to work simultaneously. But, no • Removal of the entire poured gypsum roof deck.

locations, and have the rebuilt school completed by the
start of the 2012-2013 school year.

BENEFITS
The new roofing system installed at the Henryville schools offer these superior long-term benefits not realized by their
prior roof system:

• Enhanced resistance to wind and hail. • Reduced heat-island effect.

• Seamless waterproof barrier. • Eco-friendly renewable surface.
• Highest R-value insulation available. • Very low maintenance.
