Printing
Before acquisition, it is best to choose as the Windows default printer, the printer that will be used during
the job, because all printers do not use the same number of number of lines, and this affect printing,
because DART would prepare a formatting for printing on your Windows default printer. If you actually
print on another printer, the risk that your page won’t appear completely or will not be well sized
increases.
No printers in Windows
When 2 DART jobs are opened at the same time, (Note: Second job may be open by launching a second
DART windows, from DART executable icon, then opening a second DART job) you may lose the
windows printer, and not be able to print anymore. Only solution in that case is to completely shutdown
and restart the computer. Printers installed in Windows will reappear.

Printing
Before using a printer in DART, one option needs to be checked: The size of the printout, most
commonly “letter” or “A4”.
Having set “letter” instead of “A4” would reduce the width of the printed page, and possibly make you
loose one column, on your final printout.
Using DART Schlumberger printer, you can print 9 columns in a portrait page or 14 columns in a
landcape page. You can print respectively only 8 columns and 13 columns from the Summary Of Result
page, because an additional one column is used by DART to output the duration of the flow period.
One method that has been proposed is to change the scaling of the page, from 100%, to 80%. This will
increase the number of columns available, both in portrait and in landcape mode. This option is however
depending on the printer. If your default printer does not have it, then your Schlumberger Pdf printer
won’t have it as well. Also, this option reduces also the height of the page, in addition to its width, which
makes the page appear as not being well fit to its page.
You can see below this option, respectively from PdfWriter, and Acrobat Distiller:

Printing
Pdf Writer and Acrobat Distiller are 2 printers that are added to your list of available printers, when
Acrobat is installed. They go in addition to the Schlumberger Pdf printer, available from DART.
It happens sometimes that the page to print does not appear fully when printing with the Schumberger Pdf
report.
For example, even the nominal number of columns won’t appear fully (14 for landscape pages, or
13 in the Summary of Result, and 9 for portrait pages):
Also the bottom of the page can get lost, with either the last values or the last events, not
appearing at all, before report jumps to next section on next page.
Example: Last value of a Main Result section with Schlumberger Pdf report:
Last value of the same Main Result section with Acrobat Distiller:
In this example, 21 lines had been skipped by Schlumberger Pdf report, while they all appear in
Acrobat Distiller, or on the screen before printing.
Acrobat PdfWriter is not very usefull, since it records even less lines from the section than
Schlumberger Pdf Printer.

Printing
Schlumberger Pdf Report is not perfect, considering the final printed report. Acrobat Distiller Printer
corrects some of the flaws from Schlumberger Pdf report, but adds some more of its own and is not
perfect either.
So the best seems to produce a merged report. Events, Summary of Results and Main Results pages will
be better printed Acrobat Distiller while all other sections or pages will be better printed using
Schlumberger Pdf Printer.
You can merge two or more Pdf reports, by deleting pages from a Pdf, extracting pages from a Pdf file, or
importing pages from a Pdf file into another Pdf file.

Edition of cells
Edition of cells
GasGR is given in the Schlumberger Pdf report with unit (SG). Your client is requesting you to change it
to (air=1), which is more commonly used in the oilfield. You may not be able to choose this unit in
DART (up to version 1.1a44), but you can manually edit the resulting Pdf file from DART.
Type the new value and unselect the changed value. The change is validated.
You cannot use the TouchUp Text Tool, to select an empty cell, because there is nothing to select.

Edition of cells
To fill in an empty cell, or to add a line, anywhere in the report, use the Form Tool
Create a border at the place and of the size of the text to add. When the border is chosen and the mouse is
released, a form appears:
In Appearance Tab,
• Uncheck Border Color
• Check Background Color as solid, of the color you want
• Select Text Color, Font and Size
• Check that the Form Field is visible, so it will appear when viewing the page, AND when printing.

Edition of cells
You can know the attributes of an existing Pdf text, similar to the one you want to add by using
the TouchUp Text Tool, selecting the text, right clicking and selecting “Attributes”. This can
help you selecting the font and size of the text you are adding with the Form Tool.
In Options tab,
• Select in “default” field, the text or value you wish to appear on the page
• Select the alignment, a sentence in the DART pdf report would be aligned left, a value in a cell would
be aligned right, and a unit would be aligned in the middle.
• Uncheck the box for the limits of characters, otherwise, your text may not fully appear on the page.
This limit also affects you when you use the TouchUp Text, to modify an existing field, by restricting
the number of characters affectively appearing on the page, compared to the ones you typed.
For the text you created using this method, to appear in the Pdf file, you need to unselect the Form Text.
This can be done, by selecting any tools other than the Form tool.
To fill up a channel with a unit that doesn’t exist in DART, the above method can be used on a
channel with “no unit” selected in DART.

Converting data to and from Pdf
If you create in DART a “user editable” page instead of a “picture” page, selections can only be
copied from Microsoft Word, and not anymore from Microsoft Excel.

Converting data to and from Pdf
When creating a picture page from Excel copied cells, it is recommended to leave an empty line
below the last written line. Otherwise, a line appears in the middle of the last written line.
The above method is also usefull when trying to insert an excel page, like a DST string, as
image into a “picture” page in DART report. It can happen, that the copy and paste function
from Excel to DART report is not efficient and cuts the original Excel file, in width or in length.
In that case, a solution is to directly convert the DST string from Excel into a Pdf file, then apply
the method above, to reconvert the Pdf file, into an image that will better fit into a DART
“picture” page.
Instead of a full file, you can also edit part of a Pdf file and convert it into an image by
copy/paste using the Graphic Select Tool.
Pdf files are not readable using standard file reader. From a client point of view, it is not good to receive a
Pdf report, even on electronic format, because they cannot re-use the data provided in another program,
like Microsoft Excel to make graphs, or else.
Also, transforming data from a Pdf file, into a text file, removes the chances of having differences
between the printed report from DART, and the exported Ascii files, due to difference in interpolation
method when outputting the data.
Some functions in Acrobat enable to transform text file from Pdf file, into a text ASCII file.
First tool for a simple selection is Text Select Tool. First select the tool in Acrobat:

Then copy and paste into a text file, in Notepad or another Text editor:
And the Table selects and copy text data under the form of a table:
A text from a Pdf file can only be converted in a text format again, if it was originally a text
before it’s conversion as Pdf. So a text, cannot be copied as image, transformed into a Pdf file,
and then reconverted as a text file.
