Problem 1. A Simple Curve Has A Central Angle of 36° and A Degree of Curve of 6°. (Arc Basis)

This document provides solutions to three problems related to surveying curves. [1] For a curve with a central angle of 36° and degree of 6°, it calculates the external distance from the midpoint to the point of tangency intersection as 9.83m and the middle ordinate distance to the midpoint of the long chord as 9.35m. [2] Given that the point of curvature stationing is 10+020, it determines the stationing of a point 8° from the tangent through PC to be 10+073.33.

Problem 1. A simple curve has a central angle of 36° and a degree of curve of 6°. (Arc Basis)

a. Find the nearest distance from the midpoint of the curve to the point of intersection
of the tangents.
b. Compute the distance from the midpoint of the curve to the midpoint of the long
chord joining the point of curvature and point of tangency.
c. If the stationing of the point of curvature is at 10+020, compute the stationing of a
point on the curve which intersects with the line making a deflection angle of 8°
with the tangent through the PC.

Solution to problem “a”

The nearest distance from the midpoint of the curve to the point of intersection of the tangents pertains
to the External Distance (E)

Before you can compute the External Distance you need to compute first the Radius.

E=9.83 m.

Solution to problem “b”

The distance from the midpoint of the curve to the midpoint of the long chord joining the point of
curvature and point of tangency, pertains to Middle Ordinate.

Solution to problem “c”

PC is the starting point of the curve and PT is the end point of the curve

In this problem, we need to compute the stationing of point X. using the equation:

Sta.X = Sta.PC + Lc x
Where:
Sta.X = stationing of point X
Sta.PC = stationing of PC
Lc x =¿ length of curve from PC to point X

Using ratio and proportion solution we have

Lc x 20 m
=
16 ° 6°

Lc x =53.33 m.

Sta.PC is at 10+020, this means that PC is 10,020 meters away from the zero marker.
We can write 10+020 as 10,020 m.

Sta. X=Sta. PC + Lc x

Sta. X=( 10+ 020 ) +53.33 m.

Sta. X=10,020 m .+ 53.33 m.
