PSA Video Presentation Lesson & Summative Assessment

You will be designing your own 1.5 to 3 minute PSA to raise awareness and elicit a change in behavior or
habit related to a public health issue. Your PSA should have a clear message, raise awareness, and a call
to action. This video PSA will be based on the topic you explored while completing your Webercise and
Graphic Organizer assignments.

Instructions:

1. Complete the Planning table.

2. Complete the Storyboard
3. Produce your PSA using a video recording program.

Planning

Please provide responses in the column on the right. Be thorough and detailed, but do not use complete
sentences. Do not start the next step until you have received Teacher Approval.

Questions Responses

What is the main idea or public health issue?

What Behavior/Habit are you attempting to change?

What is the mood of your PSA?

How do you plan to elicit that mood?

Who is your intended audience?

What type of reinforcement do you plan to use? (positive or negative) or do

you plan to use ethos, pathos, or logos?
Explain how you plan to incorporate that type of reinforcement.

What supporting facts or statistics do you plan to include from your research?
Look at your Graphic Organizer and Webercise for facts or statistics.

What is the possible solution you are suggesting?

What is the call to action?

Production

You will now begin Creating your 1.5 - 3 minute long PSA on your chosen public health issue. Your PSA
should have a clear message, raise awareness, and a call to action.

Filming Directions:

 You may use a iphone, iPad, laptop camera, or any other smartphone camera.
 Your Production “Set” should minimize undesired background noises, interruptions.
 Consider lighting and time of day you are filming
 When filming, try to keep your camera as steady as possible. Create a DIY tripod/stand if you
want; otherwise, prop your device on something.
 Practice and do multiple takes. Think of it as a rough draft. If there are other people are in your
production, they should not be reading from a script, so have them rehearse in advance.
Dialogue should be spoken clearly and at an appropriate volume. Test your sound quality in
advance.
 Break your production down into segments, or “takes.” Use each storyboard frame as a “take.”
(Therefore, if you used 9 storyboard frames, you will have 9 takes.) Film each take individually
and multiple times. This will give you options to choose from when editing.
 Take shots from different distances (close up, medium shot & long shot)
 Take shots from different angles (front, side, back, low, high)

Editing:

 After you are finished filming, use any Editing Program you are comfortable with to create your
PSA. I would suggest using WeVideo or ClipChamp or iMovie or Windows Moviemaker from
your iPad or laptop. Whatever you choose, keep in mind that you will need to publish, export,
and share the finished production.

 You should have multiple takes of each of your 9 storyboard frames. View and select the best
take for each, and put these in order based on the sequence of your storyboard.
 Trim the clips if needed to get rid of any unnecessary parts.
 Add a Title at the beginning of the video (include your name)
 Add transitions between scenes
 Add some sounds and/or music to enhance the mood:
If you add sound/music during dialogue, make sure the dialogue is still easy to hear
The entire video does not need to have music, you can pick and choose when/where
 Use Royalty free music such as YouTube Audio Library
 Add Credits at the End for:
People who contributed to the making of the video - include names & titles
Resource used such as: website links you used for information, images, sounds, music, etc
 After your PSA is filmed and edited upload your PSA to YouTube and share the link on the class
discussion board.
