Effects of global warming may include more extreme weather events in the future like floods, storms and heat waves. Most countries signed an agreement to reduce greenhouse gases but the US rejected it.

4 Global warming

Complete the conversation below with the following questions.

How will the weather change in the future? What is global warming?
What are governments doing about this problem? What are greenhouse gases?

Jin: What is global warming?

Mario: This is the increase in the temperatures around the world.
Jin: What is the cause of global warming?
Mario: Well, scientists believe that humans are responsible. We produce too many greenhouse
gases.
2
Jin:
Mario: These are gases like CO2 (carbon dioxide). A high concentration of greenhouse gases means
that heat from the sun cannot escape and the climate becomes warmer.
3
Jin:
Mario: It is difficult to say, but we can expect more extreme weather conditions like floods, storms
and heat waves.
4
Jin: It sounds serious.
Mario: Well, most countries signed the Kyoto Protocol in 1997. They agreed to produce fewer
greenhouse gases. But in 2001, the USA rejected the agreement.

1. (verb): get away from a closed area

2. (noun): very large amounts of water on dry land
