Summary of IRC 3 (1983)
While designing the road components, the consideration of vehicle movement on it is very important.
The dimensions and weight of the vehicle are thee major factors considered while designing the road.
Height: Height od=f the vehicle plays an important role in designing the clearance height at road
section in case of tunnels and traffic under the bridge.
Length: The total length of the vehicle is considered while designing the curves and formulating
safety regulations.
Width: The design of width of road lanes and shoulder are based on the width of the design vehicle.
Weight: The ultimate goal of providing the pavement is to distribute the load coming from vehicles on
road to subgrade uniformly and safely. Therefore we must know the weight coming from the vehicles
moving on roads to design the good quality pavement. Weight of the vehicle plays an important role
in deciding the thickness of the pavement.
This code was provided firstly in 1954 when there had been considerable changes were taking place
design of construction of motorised vehicles. Therefore it was necessary to consider the vehicles
weight and dimensions for the better quality of road. The amendment in this code were made in 1968
and later in 1983.
Scope
To get the better comfort while travelling it is necessary to consider the design vehicle while
designing the road geometry. The standard given in the code should be applied to all the road design
except bridges and culvert.
There are mainly three types of commercial vehicle with reference to which we design the road.
1) Single Unit Truck
2) Semi Trailer
3) Truck Trailer Combination
Selection of this design vehicle depends on the terrain condition and importance of the road.
Definitions
The various definitions are mentioned in the IRC 3 regarding the type of vehicle, dimensions of
vehicles and types of axles.
1) Width - 2.5 m
2) Height - 3.8 m
4.2 m (Carrying ISO series 1 freight containers)
4.75 m (Double Decker Bus)
There is also a table given in the code for Maximum Permissible Gross Weights and Maximum Axle
Weights of transport vehicles.
