A/T Harsh 3-2 Downshift - New TCM
Affected Vehicles
1997-98 Galant A/T models produced February 3, 1997 to October 20, 1997 (VIN VE114438 to WE053859).
1997-98 Eclipse Spyder A/T models equipped with 2.4L engine produced February 3, 1997 to October 20, 1997
(VIN VE114470 to WE053838) and the following vehicles equipped with a replacement or remanufactured
automatic transmission.
1994-98 Galant A/T models produced before October 20, 1997 (VIN WE053859).
1996-98 Eclipse Spyder A/T models equipped with 2.4L engine produced before October 20, 1997 (VIN
WE053838).
Purpose
When decelerating below 30 mph, then accelerating prior to completely stopping, the automatic transmission
may shift from third gear to second gear with some harshness.
Installing a new, reprogrammed transmission control module (TCM) listed in the PARTS INFORMATION sec-
tion will improve shift quality during this driving condition.
Procedure
Inspect the A/T assembly and TCM part numbers installed on the vehicle. Install the appropriate TCM listed in
the PARTS INFORMATION section of this bulletin. Refer to Group 23 in the appropriate service manual for
TCM replacement procedures.
On original equipment A/T assemblies, the part number is located where indicated by “A”. See Fig. 1.
On replacement A/T assemblies, the part number is located where indicated by “B”. See Fig. 2.
On remanufactured A/T assembly P/N RMD973041 there is a round gold identification mark on the torque
converter housing. See Fig. 2.

NOTE: On 1996 Eclipse Spyder models, verify on the Warranty Superscreen whether the A/T assembly has
already been replaced:
a. If the A/T assembly has already been replaced, replace the TCM.
b. If it has not already been replaced, diagnose for possible mechanical A/T concerns. DO NOT
b. replace the TCM unless a replacement A/T has been installed.
