The growth mindset is important to maintain that forward momentum. You must
keep your mind oriented to the goal or you may find yourself on a crazy tangent or
completely given up. Neither one of those is very conducive to achieving any goal be it
personal or professional. Everyone has that “inner voice” that seems to speak only
when there is adversity. It’s always saying things like, “just give up”, or “you aren’t smart
enough of good enough to do that.” That is the fixed mindset that would rather you
become a rock and steadily doing nothing worthwhile that may be difficult. These are
usually the things that are the most rewarding. The only counter to that is having a
growth mindset. Growth mindset can help you see that you are capable of doing
whatever you wish to set your mind to.
The first step is to slow down and listen to my inner voice. I need to hear those
negative remarks that my internal evil twin is whispering to me. Like the devil on my
shoulder, he should be heard if only to be sure you have the right come-back to silence
him. Daily meditation is usually achieved for me through my hobbies and my music. I
relax and play guitar and I hear that voice saying, “you can’t play that, it’d way too hard
for you.” I don’t just ignore it though. That would make it build up and become a major
issue later. Instead, I make a choice.
I make a conscious decision to listen to that inner voice and decide how best to
tackle the situation. I know I have been practicing and playing for 30 years but this is an
entirely new way of playing and using the guitar. I could choose to ask for help, but I am
eventually the one that is going to play it so that might not work. I would choose to just
practice it over and over again until I had it.
Taking those negatives and turning them into positives is the ultimate goal of the
growth mindset. Utilizing the power of yet can turn anything into a positive. Taking that
“You can’t play this!” and adding the word yet to the end of it is not only a positive, it
serves and encouragement as well. “I can’t play that song…yet! “
Eventually I will have to set some goals and make plans to take action on those
positives I have made. Take the time to practice and reflect on what I have learned.
Then of course apply this lesson to other areas of my life to maintain that growth
mindset.
I intend to use the subject I teach to promote the growth mindset as well as the
message of “yet”. I teach flight and space, and automation and robotics to 6th and 7th
graders. These are project based learning, pre-engineering courses designed to teach
the engineering design process. I also incorporate the growth mindset into nearly every
project or problem we work on in class. I plan to use this same model to share the
growth mindset with our staff and fellow teachers. I will assign a design challenge during
professional development that will incorporate the 4 steps of achieving the growth
mindset. This can be used every summer during leadership seminar, as well as all staff
PD throughout the year. I put at least one aspect of the growth mindset into every
lesson I present to my students.
