A2. RECORDING TEACHER OBSERVATION CHECKLIST


For one of your required projects your teacher will need to complete a detailed observation checklist against the
benchmarks. To check that this has been completed please confirm with your teacher.

TASKS COMPLETED

Place the required audio components in correct position:


Studio monitors, headphones (and amp if needed), microphones, DIs, interface, computer
and MIDI controller
Ensure all components have power
Using extension cables and power boards efficiently
Link all audio components with appropriate cabling
Using multicore/patch bay if appropriate
Safely power on audio components in the correct sequence

Set up the project in the recording software

Perform a line check and set gains


of all input equipment and output equipment ensuring you hear sound from studio monitors and
headphone sends
Record the first take

Record overdubs
Ensuring gains are set appropriately
Organise your mix in the software
Label tracks, Group tracks, set up auxiliary FX, Setup master fader, trim and organise clips
Balance Levels
Ensuring you leave enough head room, you may need to use compression, automation and clip gain
Pan instruments left and right

EQ tracks

Add FX to tracks

Master the mix


On master fader, use compression/limiter over whole mix and add fade in and fade out
Bounce project
To MP3 and WAV files
Restore studio to pre-existing condition
Reset the controls of the interface and other components for the next user

For one of your required projects your teacher will need to complete a detailed observation checklist against the
benchmarks. To check that this has been completed please confirm with your teacher.

TASKS COMPLETED
Confirm technical requirements
What do the music acts require? How many microphones are needed? Etc
Place all required audio components in the correct position
Front of house speakers, foldback speakers, microphones, Dis, mixing desk, and power
amps if needed
Ensure all components have power using extension cables and power boards efficiently
Link all audio components with correct cabling – using multicore if appropriate
Safely power on audio components in the correct sequence
Perform a line check – of all input equipment and output equipment
Use performers and perform individual sound checks on each instrument
Optimising EQ, adding appropriate FX and panning instruments
Communicate with performers to determine the right amount of foldback level in their
monitors
Perform a sound check with the entire group, mixing the sound as a whole
Manipulating EQ, FX, pan and volume to get a desirable result
Mix the performance
Paying close attention to the changes that may happen with performers on stage and
refining the sound as you go
Safely power off audio components in the correct sequence
Pack up and disassemble all audio components and reset the controls of the mixing
desk for the next user
Demonstrated problem solving skills
On the job or through scenario questions
Demonstrated industry standard communication skills
On the job or through scenario questions
Complied with Work Health and Safety regulations
