SUMMER SEMESTER EXAM QUESTIONS, 2020
ELECTRICITY AND MAGNETISM 100L
INSTRUCTIONS: ANSWER ALL QUESTIONS
TIME: 2Hrs

1. (a) State the meaning of the following and give five (5) examples of each.
i. Vector Quantity
ii. Scalar Quantity

(b) With the aid of diagrams, show four (4) Co-ordinate systems in use.
(c) Calculate the resultant (x) of the following forces in the diagram below,
and find the angular direction of the force (Angle ABC).

x
25N

A B
30N

2. (a) State the following and show them mathematically.

i. The Superposition Principle
ii. Coloumb’s Law

(b) Electric field lines can be depicted graphically, show the pictorial
representation of a Uniform E-Field, Non-Uniform E-field and the E-field
around a Positively and Negatively charged particle.
(c) A conductor possesses a positive charge of 6.4 x 10 -19 C. How many
electrons does it have in excess or deficit? (Take e = 1.6 x 10 -19 C).

3. (a) A charge q 1 = 5.0μc is placed 30cm to the west of another charge q 2 =12μc.
What is the force exerted by the positive charge on the negative charge?

(b) In figure below, q 1 = -1.0μc, q 2 = +2.0μc and q 3 = +4.0μc. Find the

electrostatic force on q 1 to the two other charges. You should express your result
as a magnitude and direction.

(c) ABCD is a square of 0.04m side. Charges 16 x 10 -9 , -16 x 10 -9 and 32 x 10 -9

coulomb are placed at the points A, C and D respectively. Find the electric field
strength at point B.
