Pointless - Important Thing Is To Understand Philosophy of Droop Control Once You Understand That, It Becomes Self Evident. in

1) Droop control allows the frequency or speed of a generator connected to an infinite bus bar to drop below its set point when load increases, allowing more steam and active power output. 2) When load increases on a generator, its electrical torque increases, causing its rotor to decelerate and frequency to decrease. To maintain frequency, more steam is added by increasing the governor throttle opening. 3) For generators connected to an infinite bus bar, speed cannot change due to the bus bar's large rotational inertia. Instead of increasing speed, the speed reference set point is increased to cause a difference that admits more steam and increases power output. This intentional dropping of speed below the set point during loading is known as droop

You are on page 1/ 2

I will try not to get too technical ,but then when it is necessary, it is necessary.

I assume
you have basic knowledge in Synchronous machine otherwise it is pointless.Important
thing is to understand philosophy of droop control once you understand that,it becomes
self evident. In what follows as an explanation for what droop control is I would like to
take up the following scenarios.
1)An isolated Synchronous Generator
2)Synchronous Generator connected to an Infinite bus Bar (Infinite bus bar is something
which maintains frequency and terminal voltage of synchronous generator constant)
The frequency of a synchronous AC generator (the type most commonly used in AC
power generation) is directly proportional to the speed of the rotating electrical field(s) F
= P * N / 120, where F = frequency (in Hz), P = number of poles of the rotating electrical
field, and N = the speed of the rotating electrical field (in RPM).In generator there are
two torques a)Prime Mover Torque (P.M torque) and b)Electrical torque. If active load on
synchronous gen is increased maintaining terminal voltage constant, then current
increases(Increasing load is same as addition of parallel resistance across a voltage
source) hence Electrical torque increases and therefore rotor tends to decelerate,as a
result frequency decreases. This is where amount of steam(power i/p) via governor to
turbines is to be increased so that the extra load requirement is met.Until that time the
rotational kinetic energy of the rotor supplies to the external load. The closed loop
negative feedback control law, therefore would be to compare the frequency of the
rotor(Speed) with that of set point(desired speed) . If the frequency is less then reference
increase throttle opening, allowing more steam to pass through until the time set
frequency is achieved,vice versa
Life is all good if it is as simple as that. But,it is not. What is different?
The difference is we do not use a single generator for supplying power but use a large
number of generators in parallel which we commonly call as infinite bus.The main
characteristic of infinite bus is that it has infinite rotational inertia ,which means the
generator connected to this scheme has constant speed.
So,how to increase/decrease power o/p of generator synchronised to infinite bus?
The steam being admitted to the turbine of the AC generator is being controlled in
response to the difference between a speed (frequency) reference and the actual speed
(frequency) of the prime mover.
To summarise
1)the speed of generator connected to infinite bus bar cannot change irrespective of
load connected to it.
2) throttle control action is proportional to the difference between the speed reference
and actual speed.
So what is done is ,the frequency/speed reference is increased so that there is a
difference between reference speed and actual speed hence more steam is allowed to
pass
In other words ''Operating Speed" is allowed to ''droop'' below the set speed for a while
to increase active power o/p of generator. This is known as droop control.Hope I made it
clea
