Dear Abby 06

Dear Slow in San Francisco, there is no need to worry about your daughter's development. At age 4, children develop motor skills at different rates and your daughter's skipping and leg movements are normal. Playing at the playground and doing activities like dancing can help her motor skills improve over time.

Dear Abby,

My four-year-old daughter seems to process ideas very slowly. Are girls slower at
processing information? I’ve heard if children go straight from sitting to walking without
crawling it causes brain development problems. She scooted but didn’t crawl much. And
now she has a very difficult time skipping. She always leads out with the same leg and
really doesn't swing back and forth. Is that normal for a four-year-old? How can I tell if
something is wrong?
Slow in San Francisco

Dear Slow in San Francisco,

Thank you for reaching out, parenting is stressful and scary sometimes, but I assure you
there is no need to worry about your daughter. At her age, she is still developing her motor skills.
Each child’s motor development is different, for some child they can move faster for some it will
take time. It all comes back to environmental influences around them, culture, family beliefs, and
maturity of the child. Gross motor skills improve dramatically during early childhood
(Berger,2018, p. 231). At age, two to six years old children develop news skills that will help
them matured and children develop motor skills at their own pace. It does not mean that there is
something wrong with the child. Your daughter’s brain is perfectly normal as she gets older her
brain maturity and motor gross skills will continue to grow. You can help your daughter learn
and develop motor skills by letting her play, like for example letting her play in the trampolines.
Playing in the trampolines is a great activity to improve balance, playground play, dancing and
all these activities will help your daughter develop her motor skills. I will attach an article for
you to read about early childhood development.

Sincerely,
Abby
Dear Abby,
Are boys more accident prone than girls or is that just a myth? My little cousin has
already been to the hospital twice, and he’s only four. First his stomach had to be
pumped because he took his mother’s pills. Then just last week he fell into a pool.
Luckily, someone saw him and pulled him out. Are accidents more common in early
childhood? If so, why? What recommendations do you have for preventing accidents
among children?
Overdosed in Ottawa

Dear Overdosed in Ottawa,

Thank you for reaching out. I am sorry to hear about what happens to your little cousin, it is
frustrating to watch him being in the hospital especially he is only four years old. Children like to
mimic us, adults, what they see on us they will always want to try it. They are always curious
their curiosity sometimes leads to injury. They develop motor skills that they see and practice
(Berger, 2018, p. 237). To answer your question boys are not prone to injury, kids, in general, are
prune to injury. Immaturity of the prefrontal cortex makes young children impulsive; they plunge
into danger (Berger, 2018, p. 237). Children’s motor skills allow them to run, jump and grab
anything they see. An accident is very common in early childhood due to their impulsive
behavior plus their curiosity. My recommendation is keeping all medicine, cleaning supplies, and
any harmful chemical out of children’s reach; use child- safety proof doors especially the door
that access the pool. Avoid transferring potentially harmful substances to different receptacles
that catch the child’s attention, like soda bottles or food storage containers. These can confuse
the child and encourage ingestion, and please do not call medicine a “candy” which could
encourage attraction to the child, and it may lead to overdosing. We cannot control injury
because children are curious, they move around they run and jump. They like to follow act what
they have seen which is not a bad thing will help them develop their motor skills, as parents,
guardians, or caregivers, and adults we can prevent injury from happening by being responsible
and set a good example for them.
I will attach an article for you to read about how we can prevent injury form happening. I hope
this help.

Best regards,
Abby
