renewable generation on power system operation. Role of storage and demand side
management.

Duration: 14 Weeks, 28 contact Lectures (75 minutes each) including exams and public
holidays. First lecture starts on sun. 20/9/2020 and last one on Wednesday 19/12/208.

1. Introduction to optimization: objective function; constraints (equality and inequality); Lagrange 2
Function.
2. Optimal economic system operation: cost curves; equal incremental cost loading; penalty factors 4
and incremental transmission losses.
3. Unit Commitment: definition; importance; factors to be considered (operating, reserve, start-up and 5
network constraints); methods for solving unit commitment problem.
4. Electricity Markets: reasons and history; competition and its models; types of markets; participants 5
(consumer, producer and system operator).
5. Pricing: introduction; pricing mechanisms; marginal:pricing, costing and revenue; pricing policies 5
and methodes.
6. Optimal Power Flow: difference from conventional power flow; objective functions and its 6
costraints; problem formulation and its solution.
7 Power System Security: definition; ancillary services: types,buying and selling. 6
8. Generation and transmission investments: generation capacity from investor and customer’s 5
perspective; transmission expansion and its cost.
9. Impact of: renewable generation; energy storage and demand side mangement on power system 4
operation.
