Triad Sequence For D - DM F Am C / em G Bmb5 DM Ii7

Carol Kaye provides wisdom on chord substitutions and voicings: 1) Diatonic chords can substitute chords sharing two notes. Triads can be stacked on each note of a chord. 2) Dominant 7th chords can move in minor 3rd intervals to create altered dominant substitutions. Half diminished triads can also voice notes of a dominant 7th chord. 3) The viib5 chord combines elements of the ii and V chords. Carol also notes a fingering pattern for scales on bass involving alternating minor and major third intervals.

Carol Kaye’s Wisdom

1) Diatonic chords - I ii iii IV V vi vIib5 I

Chords sharing 2 notes may be used as subs

I iii vi - Group1

ii IV - Group 2

vii ii V - Group 3

2) Triad Stacks Play triad off each note in chord 1 3 5 7 9 11 13

Triad sequence for D - Dm F Am C / Em G Bmb5 Dm = ii7

Min7 = i + Min7b5 = iib5
i7 + iib57(really ii + iiib5) [willie half
dim 3rd of I ?]

Triad sequence for G7- G Bmb5 Dm F / Am C Em G = V7

Dom7 =I7 + Min7 = ii
I7 + ii (Really V + vi)

Triad sequence for C - C Em G Bmb5 / Dm F Am C7 = Imaj7

Maj7 = I + Min7 = ii
I + ii

3) Diminished for Dominant Subs - Moving dominant chords by minor 3rd’s

If
Bdim = Ddim = Fdim = Abdim……. All = G7b9
Bdim = Bb7 / Ddim = Db7 / Fdim = E7 / Abdim= G7 …… then

G7 = Bb7 = Db7 = E7 …….. Just like uncle Willie said

Moving dominant chords in minor 3rds create altered subs

G B D F Ab R 3 5 7 b9
Bb D F Ab 5 7 b9
Db B(Cb) F Ab 3 7 b9
E7 B D (f=b9) Ab(G#) 3 5 7 b9

Half diminished triads subs off of notes in a dom7 chord…. Uncle

Willie

G B D F R 3 5 7

B D F A 3 5 7 9

D F Ab C 5 7 b9 11

F Ab Cb(b) Eb 3 7 b9 b13

Ab Cb(b) Ebb(D) F 3 5 7 b9
