Activity 10:

Mail Server

Amaba, Marcus Albert M. February 6, 2018

CPE42FB1 Engr. Ariel Isidro
Objectives:
1. To install MS Exchange in MS Windows Server
2. To Configure MS Exchange to allow send and receive of email

Procedures:

1. The file needs to be acquired from the remote server of cpe@192.168.7.254. The command
shown above was used to remote sync the Windows Exchange server from the remote
server.

2. The file was acquired successfully by executing the command. By using the command
ls, we can see that the file was indeed in our server’s directory. Since it was copied to
/home/marcus initially, we need to move it to our samba file directory so that other
group members can copy it. The command used is: sudo mv
/home/marcus/E2K7SP3EN32.exe /shares/anonymous.
3.

The file’s permission was configured to allow my groupmates

to copy the file. The command sudo chmod -R 777
/shares/anonymous was used.
4. The series of screenshots shows the proof of the step by step process to get to our file
in the File Server. By going to our local computer, we can see the file was indeed in our
Samba File Server. All we need to do is to copy it to our local directory.

5. Copying of the file is initiated.

6. Now that the File was copied in our local computer, we need to copy it within the
Windows 2008 Server also. To do the same operation, we also needed to go to the
Network then type for the IP Address of your Ubuntu server. The file will be within the
directory.
7. The copying of file was initiated.

8. By clicking on the file, a pop-up windows will appear. This windows will be used to
designate where to put all the files that will be extracted. Click Ok.
9. The process of extraction had started.

10. Once the extraction was done, this window will appear. Click on Step 4.
11. It will redirect you into this website. Note: Remember to turn on VyOS router to
allow internet connection. Download the Windows 4.5 Installer
12. It will then ask you to choose what will be downloaded. Select all the files.

13. Now, all you need to install is the Installer for the 64-bit machine. Once you run the executable file,
it will install HotFix. Once the installation is finished, you need to restart the machine.

14. The next will be

the installation of the
Exchange Server 2007.
15. This will redirect you into the Setup Wizard. Click Next.

16. Accept the terms in the license agreement. Click Next.

17. Choose the
Yes(Recommended) option then click Next.

18. Choose the Typical Exchange Server Installation then Click Next.
19. Change the name for the Exchange organization. Click Next.
20. It will perform Readiness Check. Wait for it to finish to install.

21. It seems the

installation encountered an error. Go to Server Manager.
22. Once in the Server Manager, go to Roles. Right click on Web server then click Add
Roles.

23. This is where it will redirect you. Put a check on ALL the boxes to fix the error we
encountered.
24. Click Install. Once the operation is complete, go back to the Exchange Server 2007
Setup.

25. The errors are already gone. Click Install.

26. After finishing the installation, the Microsoft Management Console(MMC) will
appear.

27. Click Add Exchange Administrator.

28. Click browse. Choose the User who you want to be the Exchange Admin. Select the
Exchange Organization Administrator role.

29. Finally, the Exchange Admin has been created.

Observation

One of the observations I made in this activity is that MS Exchange Server is easy
to install but consumes lot of time. I observed that you it has lots of steps in which you
also need to add roles in the Web Server in order to finish the installation. Another
observation I had is that application compatibility is important. I downloaded wrong
installers (e.g. 64 bit installers) and that slowed me down.

Recommendation

In this activity, I recommend to finish the tasks quickly. The server installation
will take a lot of time so it is better to not procrastinate. My next recommendation is to
look at your previous documentations as those will help you fix errors that you
encounter along the way. For example, if you had wrong configurations in your VyOS
router then you will quickly fix it by checking your reference documentations.

Conclusion

In this activity, I learned how to install MS Exchange Server. But before that, I
recalled the steps on using the command rsync and this time I executed it perfectly
unlike the first time I tried it in Activity. I can say that I have been learning a lot. Next, I
learned that you need to configure the roles in Web Server to finish the readiness check
in Exchange Server.

Lessons Learned

It is important to learn the things I finished in this activity. The installation of Mail
Server will be important if you are going to apply for a system admin job. This will put
me in an advantage if I would know all the basics in installing the Exchange Server.
Next, I noticed that I can identify the source of errors that occur in the activity. I learned
that it is important to go back to things you don’t know so that you can practice it and
learn from it.
