Webinar 2
Applying Research Ethics Principles:
The Informed Consent Form and Process
Cavite State University Research Center held webinar about the ethics in
conducting a research. The First day was held last Sept. 23, 2020, 9 am via Facebook
live. The second topic is about Applying Research Ethics Principles: The informed
consent form and process. Speaker of the said topic is Dr. Rhodora C. Estacio from UP
Manila.
The second topic of this seminar about research ethics is more of informed
consent. But before that, the speaker discussed the difference between the researcher
and the research participants, and other such words for us, the audiences, to easily
understand what she was trying to inform us. Anyways, Informed consent is one of the
elements of research ethics that was discussed on the first topic. It is important that the
respondents have granted consent on the researchers in participating on a study.
Informed consent is an agreement with full information of a person with competence
and capacity, made without force, fraud, deceit, duress, coercion or undue influence.
Each participant must be adequately informed of the aims and methods, any possible
conflict of interest, benefits and risk of the study and the discomfort it may entail. There
are different kinds of informed consent and one oof them is free and informed consent.
This is not just a document that is signed. It is a continuous process by which the
research subject competently, freely and voluntarily confirms willingness to participate in
a research study after receiving, deliberating and understanding all information. There is
a need for documentation of ICF because that will provide summary of the study and
the individual’s rights as a research participant. There is a need for a record that

research participants understand what will happen and that they agree to the use of
their data for the research purpose.
Basically, this lecture aims to inform us, future researchers, on what should be
done and consider in choosing participants or subjects for our research. There are
proper processes and principles to be able to secure or ensure the rights of the
participants as well as the researchers before engaging to a study or an experiment.
