Testing Equality of Two Means: BITS Pilani

This document discusses different cases for testing the equality of two means. It outlines cases where both variances are known, both variances are unknown but sample sizes are large, and where both variances are equal but unknown. It provides the test statistics and decision rules for each case. An example is also given comparing the average marks of two student groups where the null hypothesis is that the average marks are equal between groups and the alternative is that group 1's average is higher. The t-test is used to determine if the difference in means is significant at a given percentage level.

Example
A n IC of a course is interested in analysing the average
m arks betw een G roup-1 (students w ho atte nd regularly)
and G rou p-2 (w ho attend occasionally). T he IC collected
random ly eight students from G roup-1 and six from
G roup-2 and got their total m arks as per the follow ing:
G roup-1: 68, 92, 82, 95, 70, 90, 85, 40
G roup-2: 56, 94, 70, 84, 73, 35
(a) D efine your null and alternating hyp othese ?
(b) A t w hat % level o f significance, the data indicates that
the average m arks of G roup-1 is m ore tha n G roup-2 ?
(A ssum e norm ality and equal variance)
