INTRODUCTION
Unemployment represents the number of people in the work force who wants to work but do not
have a job. The aim of this project is to find meaningful solutions to unemployment especially
among the youths. Unemployment has different causes but really, persons do not really focus on
what can be done to lower the rate of unemployment in our society especially among the youths.

PLAN OF INVESTIGATION
The topic of this project is Solutions to Unemployment among Youth. This issue worries me
because I often times wonder if I will be able to get a job and if the unemployment rate will
decrease. I have a personal interest on this topic as it will help me to have a clearer
understanding on this issue and also to find meaningful solutions to this issue. I intend to use
three pieces of material, which will be a written article about unemployment, a brief interview of
a person who was unemployed and a documentary that involves the solution to unemployment.

Reflection 1
The issue of unemployment has many solutions. Putting together my three artifacts, which were
a written article, a brief documentary and an interview on this issue among youths has changed
the way in which I think of the about this issue greatly.
After reading the article entitled Youth Unemployment High, Says ILO from the Gleaner
Newspaper, showed how the rate of unemployment increased yearly. I personally thought that
being unemployed will take about 1 to 3 years before getting a permanent job. This though have
been erased after putting in much consideration about this issue. The solution entrepreneurship
was the best solution that came to mind. Being an entrepreneur allows unemployed persons to
become their own bosses for their own business. This way the unemployment rate will decrease.
In many countries, unemployment is one of the leading causes of poverty and broken homes.
When an individual is unemployed he or she, I thought, had no choice but to stay home and wait
for another opportunity to come up. In my second artifact which was an interview of a person
who was unemployed, the interviewer what was the plan for his future he mentioned, if i recall
correctly, the he would do something in the skills field. This mentioned solution was deeply
examined for me. To do a skill, although it does not pay much, is somewhat better to do than to
stay home for months or years to get a job. Skills such as farming, engineering and technology
can be explored. With this entrepreneurship can come into play.
I thought that after doing full studies at the secondary or tertiary level unemployment is the first
things that grace the presence of the youths. In my third artifact, which explored on the average
amount of employee but a small number of employers. In this case, I became clueless as to how
this will be fixed. The solution in this piece was having a school of entrepreneur where students,
after being qualified, will not be searching for a job but creating their own. After having to think
about how the rate of unemployment will be lowered and the possible solutions to fix the
problem the solutions mentioned were deeply explored and my thoughts have been changed
during the process of this project.
Reflection 2
In my artifacts used focuses on the solutions to unemployment among youths. The youths within
the Caribbean and at large face this issue which makes it easier to identify exactly what the issue
is and how it can be fixed.
My first piece of artifact was a newspaper article. In this article it spoke about youth
unemployment rate and how high it. In this we recognized a variety of styles used and its own
system of language means. This artifact should catch the eyes of reader with the heading entitled
Youth Unemployment High, Says ILO, speaks on a very common issue and in this way attracts
the attention of readers. The artifact was very informative of how high the unemployment rate
was which, I think, when the readers read, will find tangible solutions to fix the issue.
My second piece was an interview of a person who was unemployed. Although the person who
was being interviewed was not shown, the tone of voice helped in identifying how the person
feels about the state that he was in. This will help viewers to deeply recognize how the issue of
unemployment make individuals in the situation feel and in the same way will draw attentions of
others who will be seeking employment.
The third piece of artifact was a brief documentary on unemployment. The documentary
explored widely on how unemployment and where it will start from for youths. It is likewise
informative in terms of giving solutions to the issue which were useful. This information was
brought across as a means to attract viewers with the idea of animated graphics.

The process of doing this SBA helped me as a student to become better as an individual because
doing this project allowed me to think outside of my usual thinking capacity and also helped me
to have a better understanding as to how to accept issues such as the topic of this project. Doing
this project also allowed me to widen my knowledge by reading and researching on current
issues such as the solutions to unemployment. It also helps me to identify the different tones used
As a student, after doing this project allowed me to want to contribute greatly on this issue by
creating businesses that will allow youths such as myself to have after leaving the secondary or
tertiary levels of studies. The solution to unemployment has to start from somewhere. In doing
this it allowed me to start thinking how I can become a better youth if I contribute greatly in
order for the rate of unemployment to decrease. Hence, doing this SBA helped me to shape my
mind on the issues and allowing me to think deeply on contributing so that youths and myself

Planning this project with the group members showed that our different ideas combined together
with the issue of unemployment can allow us to know that this issue does affect youths within a
society and also families can be greatly influenced by this issue. The causes of unemployment
are numerous. As discussed with the group members causes such as under or over qualification,
lack of proper education along with others were mentioned which leads up to the effects of
unemployment which poverty, broken homes and family disconnectivity were mainly
highlighted. This is where the families are greatly influenced as members of the family will not
be able to benefit with the basic needs and wants they would require. The solutions to different

issues mentioned under the topic of unemployment were to become our own bosses by creating
jobs- entrepreneurships. This way families and youths within the society will benefit greatly as
he or she will be bosses of their own companies if the solution is approached properly.

Several hundred Jamaicans are among 75 million unemployed youth across the globe, many of
whom have given up on job hunting, according to the 2012 Globe Employment Trends for
Youth.
The report, released by the Geneva-based International Labor Organization (ILO), says that
youth employment has remained “close to its crisis peak” of 12.6 percent experienced in 2009,
with a projection that the rate could inch up the coming month if current economic challenges
persist.
According to the report, youth employment rose by four million between 2007 and last year with
the biggest increases occurring in the Caribbean and Latin America – from 13.7 percent in 2008
to 4.3 percent last year – as well as part of Europe, and South Asia.
A 2009 World Bank report estimates Jamaica’s youth unemployment stood at nearly 27 percent,
The ILO report says the relative decline in youth unemployment that was enjoyed across the
globe from 2002 to 2007 was effectively wiped out during the peak of the globe economic crisis
in 2009. The youth unemployment rate in Latin America and the Caribbean hit a high of 15.8 in
2016, youth unemployment rate is projected to remain at the same high level,” the report notes.
But the situation among the world’s youth, the report adds, is not likely to improve soon.

“In comparison to other groups on the labor market, youth face a particularly difficult situation,
as is captured by the ratio of youth-to-adult unemployment rates. Globally, this ratio was 2.8 in
2011 and is projected at 2.7 in 2012. This means that in comparison with adult, youth continue to
be almost three times as likely to be unemployed, and elevated unemployment rate continue to

“These include a higher risk of future unemployment, a prolonged period of unstable jobs and a
potentially depressed income growth. Such consequences may result from a deterioration of
skills but also from prospective employers’ negative perceptions of youth who have been out of
work for prolonged periods. Moreover, these effects are believed to be more severe for youth
entering the workforce with an education level below the tertiary level who are already in a
relative disadvantage position compared with their better educated peers. Apart from its
detrimental effect on future wages and employability, youth unemployment may hurt happiness,
job satisfactory and health for many years thereafter,” it states, pointing to other risks such as
