Understanding

Post-test This will measure how much you have learned from
the entire SLeM.

1
Expectations
You will master how to classify materials based on the ability to
absorb water, float, sink, and undergo decay.
Specifically, this module will help you to:
1. identify materials that absorb water, float, sink and undergo decay
2. describe the properties of materials that absorb water, float, sink and
undergo decay
3. group materials based on their ability to absorb water, float, sink and
undergo decay
4. use appropriate materials for a specific use
LESSON 1: Identify and Describe Materials that Absorbs Water,
Float, Sink, and Undergo Decay

Pre-Test
A. Choose the letter of the best answer. Write your answer on a
separate paper.

1. Which of the following materials absorbs water?

A. cotton B. metal C. plastic D. rubber

2. Why does the coin sink in water?

I. It has tightly packed molecules. III. It is denser than water.
II. It has loosely packed molecules. IV. It is less dense than water.
A. I & II B. II & III C. III & IV D. I & III

3. Which of the following materials will undergo decay with the shortest
period?
A. B. C. D.

4. When you accidentally spilled the water on the floor, which is the best
material that you can use to clean it easier and faster?
A. B. C. D.

5. Which of the following materials will sink when you put in water?
A. B. C. D.

2
Looking Back

In your grade 3 Science, you have learned the three phases of matter namely solid,
liquid, and gas. Let’s have a simple activity to refresh your mind. Below are drawings of
matters in which you will classify into solid, liquid, or gas by coloring them. Use the color
code below:

solid - red liquid- blue gas- yellow

Brief Introduction
Different materials have different properties. They can be easily classified
based on their own properties. Some ways of grouping materials are as follows:

A. According to their ability to absorb water

Porous materials are materials having small holes that allow air or
liquid to pass through. These materials absorb water. Examples are:

round rug mop sponge

3
Non-porous materials are materials that do not allow water to pass
through. They do not absorb water. Examples are:

plastic container rubber gloves drinking glass

B. According to their ability to float or sink

Some materials float on water and some materials sink. Float means
to stay above the surface of the water. Sink means to go below the surface
of the water.
Objects with tightly packed molecules will sink if they are denser than
the liquid. Objects with loosely packed molecules will float if they are less
dense than liquid. An object’s shape can affect its ability to float, BUT some
materials float no matter what their shape is, such as styrofoam and balsa
wood.
Examples of materials that sink are:

coin iron nail towel

Examples of materials that float are:

log tin can styro cup

4
C. According to their ability to undergo decay
Some materials undergo decay. Decay means to be slowly destroyed
into bits in the presence of water, air, soil, and action of microorganisms.
A material is decaying when it has molds, foul odor, and worms, and
bubbles are forming. Examples of materials that undergo decay are:

bread banana peel dead animal

Activities

Activity 1. Crossword Puzzle

Complete the crossword puzzle below.
1

Across 1. means to be slowly
3. means to take in destroyed or broken down
2

3

4. means to stay above the water, air, soil and action of

surface of the water microorganism
4

5. means to go below the 2. These are materials

surface of the water having small holes that
5 allow air or liquid to pass
through.

5
Activity 2. Who Am I?
Guess the word described by the following riddle. Write the missing
letters to complete your answer.
p _ r o _ _ 1. I have many holes. Water and air can pass through me.
What material am I?
f _ o_ _ 2. When you put me in water, I will stay above the surface
because I have this ability. What is it?
__n_ 3. Coins, rocks, and bowling balls are my friends. We enjoy
going below the surface of water. We have this ability. What is
it?
d _ _ _ y 4. With the aid of water, air, soil and microorganisms, I will
slowly break down into bits.

Remember

● Porous materials are materials having small holes that allow air or
liquid to pass through. They can absorb water.
● Non-porous materials are materials that do not allow water to pass
through.
● Some materials float in water and some materials sink. Float means
to stay above the surface of the water. Sink means to go below the
surface of the water.
● Decay means to be slowly destroyed into bits in the presence of
water, air, soil, and action of microorganisms.
● A material is decaying when it has molds, foul odor, and worms, and
bubbles are forming.
