Lesson Plan - Pythagorean Theorem

The lesson plan introduces students to the Pythagorean theorem through a series of activities. Students will learn to use the theorem to find the length of one side of a right triangle given the other two sides. They will practice applying the theorem to calculate distances. Through group work and games, students will demonstrate cooperation in solving math problems and recognize the importance of the Pythagorean theorem in measuring distances in daily life. A quiz and assignment reinforce the concepts taught.

LESSON PLAN IN TRIGONOMETRY

PYTHAGOREAN THEOREM
GRADE 9

I. Objectives

At the end of the lesson, the students will be able to:

A. Demonstrate Pythagorean theorem to find the measurement of one side of the triangle,
given the 2 other sides;
B. Apply the Pythagorean theorem in finding distances;
C. Show patience and cooperation in solving math problems with their group mates; and
D. Recognize the importance of Pythagorean Theorem in our lives as an easy way of finding
measurement and distances.
II. Subject Matter

a) Topic: Trigonometry
b) Sub Topic: Pythagorean Theorem
c) Materials: Chalkboard/Whiteboard, Chalk/Whiteboard Marker, Cartolina, Drawings
and Cut shapes of triangle and squares.
d) Reference:

Pierce, Rod. (19 Oct 2016). "Pythagoras Theorem". Math Is Fun. Retrieved 3 Feb
2017 from http://www.mathsisfun.com/pythagoras.html
III. Procedure

a) Preliminary Activities
1. Prayer
2. Classroom Management
3. Checking of attendance

b) Activity

Squares-to-Triangle
Directions: The teacher will show the class a picture of three triangles with grids on it
and ask questions about it.

c) Analysis
1. What do you notice from the squares?
2. If a box inside the square represents one unit, what is the measurement of the
sides of the first, second and third square?
3. What will be the area of the sides of the first, second and third square?
4. How did you solve for the area?
5. If we connect the corners of the squares, name the possible shape that we can
form?
6. If we are to represent the measurement of the sides of the first square as a, the
second as b and the third as c, how will we represent the areas of the squares?
7. Who among the class can tell the relationship of the biggest square form the two
other squares?

d) Abstraction

Over 2000 years ago, a man named Pythagoras noticed that if you have a right triangle
and square its sides, the square of the longest side will always be equal to the sum of
the squares of the two other sides.

It is called the “Pythagorean Theorem”, it states there that the square of hypotenuse is equal to
the sum of the squares of other two legs. It can also be written in one short equation:

a 2 + b2 = c 2

Where:
 c is the longest side called hypotenuse; and
 a & b are the two other sides called legs.

Why is it useful? Because if we know the lengths of the two sides of a right triangle, we can
find the measurement of the third side. And this is very useful when we want to find the
distance between certain objects or places.

Examples
1. Two lovers broke up and left MCDO at the same time, one heading due south
and the other headed due west. After 30 minutes of dramatic walking, the one
heading south traveled a distance of 8 meters and the one heading west covered 6
meters. What is the shortest distance between the two ex-lovers as they decided
to move on from each other?
2. The distance from Petron to SM is 12 units and the distance from SM to
Robinson’s is 13 units Find the distance from Petron Tejero to Robinson’s.
3. A vertical pole 5 ft tall cast a shadow 12 ft long on a level ground. Find the
measurement from the tip of the pole to the tip of the shadow.
4. The dimension of the new iPhone XS Max is 6 in Height and 3 in Width. Find
the diagonal of the screen of the smartphone.

e) Application

Across the Bee Hive

Mechanics:
1. The class is divided into 2 teams: Blue and Red team
2. Each member must have a partner with an assigned number to them
3. There are sets of hexagon shaped as a beehive with hidden questions
4. You may answer in complete sentence or write it on the board
5. If you know the answer press the buzzer. If the answer is wrong, the other group
has a chance to steal
6. To win the game, you must connect a minimum of 4 hexagons

IV. Evaluation

Quiz
Directions: Use the Pythagorean Theorem to solve for what is asked

1. b = 21, b = 35, a = ?
2. a = 5, c = 7, b = ?
3. a = 2, b = 8, c = ? c
a

b
V. Assignment
1. Do an Advance Reading on Pythagorean Triples
