STUDYING ABROAD

Kadlin Olsen, 24, from Trondheim in Norway, studied medicine in Munich.

She chose southern Germany to study for two good reasons. She wanted to be
at the centre of Europe, within easy reach of other countries and cities such as
Paris and Prague. The other reason was that she was finding it very difficult to
ensure a place to study medicine in Norway, where there are only three medical
schools.

First she had to learn German, so she went to Munich two months before
the term started, and spent them on a language course. She stayed with a
German family and was able to practise speaking the language with them.
Nobody spoke Norwegian, of course, so it was a great help to find that there
were other students from Norway at the university. After six months she moved
into an apartment-house, sharing it with two other foreign students.

At university she enjoyed the studies and the wonderful mix of cultures.
She made many friends from different places, and for two years she had a
Norwegian boyfriend who was also studying to be a doctor, but that ended
when he left.

She would recommend studying abroad to anyone. She thinks it is the

obvious choice for students who seek to cross new frontiers in life. Besides, you
get an excellent chance to learn another language and to experience new forms
of educational and cultural aspects. In her spare time she used to visit the many
cafes and bars staying out till all hours. At weekends, she often went skiing in
the Austrian Alps with friends, piled into a rented van. In summer her favourite
place was the Englisher Garten, with its lake and park and lots of bars.

Obviously, this all costs money and, like most students, she was living on
a loan from the government. By the time she became a graduate she had a big
debt which had to be repaid with interest. Fortunately, by mid-July she got a job
as a junior doctor in a hospital located in the outskirts of Oslo. One year has
gone-by since she picked the job and, at present, she is enjoying a six-month’
clinical training at McGill University Health Centre in Montreal, Canada.
