Product News: Lube Oil Consumption of Mannheim Gas Gensets
Product News: Lube Oil Consumption of Mannheim Gas Gensets
Description Details on the lube oil consumption and declaration methods of the Mannheim sourced Gas
Engines
Availability New lube oil declarations are valid from March 2016
Oil consumption, along with fuel consumption and maintenance information, are most critical information to
estimate the total operating cost of Gas Gensets. Many factors can affect oil consumption. Some of these
factors are operational load, oil density, oil type and additive packages, operating and maintenance
practices, and overall condition of the engine.
The specific lube oil consumption states the amount of lube oil consumed at a certain power output of the
engine over a specified period of time. It does not include oil losses due to leakages and amounts of oil
from regular oil changes. The lube oil consumption has to be measured over a longer period of time, since
instationary operation, starts of the engine and the initial operating hours have increased oil consumptions.
Therefore it is required to have a certain “run-in” period, after which the lube oil consumption is measured
and stays at a low level for a longer time.
CES Gensets‘ lube oil consumption is specified on the technical datasheets as “Mean lube oil consumption
at full load” in the units gram per kWh [g/kWh]. The value refers to the Genset’s individual specific electric
power output. The lube oil consumption can vary within one series due to different nominal power, gas type
or special parts/components.

PRODUCT NEWS Lube Oil Consumption of Mannheim Gas Gensets
Only valid as mean consumption for the interval after the “run in” period and between the
maintenance intervals E70
Overall load of the engine between the E70 maintenance interval has to be 85% according to
TEM EVO display
Minimum operating hours between starts:
o CG132 8 Operating hours (Load 85%)
o CG170 8 Operating hours (Load 85%)
o CG260 24 Operating hours (Load 85%)
Gensets which are started often or operated with reduced power output might have an increased
lube oil consumption. Please see section “Mean lube oil consumption at part load”. This might
apply for gensets running on flex operation or balancing energy
Measured after an initial run-in period of operation (> 1.000 OH)
The interval for an oil consumption measurement must be the period between two oil changes
Maintenance is performed according to CES approved Maintenance Schedule by trained CES
service staff
Criteria for lube oil change according to technical circular TR 0199-99-2105 are met
Exclusive use of CES original parts
Only applicable on engines which are installed according to the CES installation guidelines
Only applicable on engines fulfilling all currently valid technical circulars
Under these conditions, the Mean Lube Oil Consumption under full load is:
When synthetic lube oil is used the lube oil consumption is reduced by 25 – 40%.
These values refer to kilowatt electric, which means with a full electric power output as stated on the type
plate according ISO 8528-1. Furthermore, for the lube oil itself the TR 0199-99-2105 has to be considered.

The lube oil consumption increases during operation under part load. Since the genst is operated with
constant rpm and hence the cylinder pressure decreases at part load, a higher amount of lube oil may be
pushed through piston rings and valve stem seal. The following formula helps to calculate the specific lube
oil consumption at part load:
Lube Oil Consumption can be declared in different ways. To compare with other types of declaration,
please consider the following:
It can be declared in g/kWh, which then refers to the mechanical output of the engine or the output at
the flywheel (Brake Specific Oil Consumption, „BSOC“). BSOC also is normally referencing to the state
of product, recently in operations, ignoring slow degradation in performance over the period between
overhauls in real life. The CES lube oil consumption does consider this practical effect
Commonly, lube oil consumption is declared in g/kWhe. It can as well be declared in the unit gram per
hour [g/hr]. To ensure a comparability, one value has to be recalculated to the same unit as the other
Maximum lube oil consumption. This declares a value which is never to be exceeded, also during starts
and part-load operation of the engine
Validity
The lube oil consumption data is based on recent measurements, field data and technical data across all
models. Please note that a value given on a project specific datasheet is valid. If you have an open project,
the value given in the datasheet is valid until there is an update to the datasheet or overall project. This
application is not retroactive to older models. The new lube oil consumption data is valid as of April 6, 2016.
