Yusop, Calvin - Stem 11-1 - Module2 - Learning Task 2

This document compares and contrasts prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells. Prokaryotic cells lack a nucleus and membrane-bound organelles, while eukaryotic cells contain a nucleus and many membrane-bound organelles. Both contain DNA, ribosomes, cytoplasm, and a plasma membrane, but eukaryotic cells are more complex with linear chromosomes, mitochondria, and organelles like the Golgi apparatus. Prokaryotic cells are unicellular while eukaryotic cells can be unicellular or multicellular.

- Eukaryotes can be unicellular or multicellular. The structures
that are present only in eukaryotic cell are nucleus and its
nuclear membrane; organelles such as the (but not limited to):
mitochondria, chloroplasts, endoplasmic reticulum, the Golgi
apparatus, peroxisomes, and lysosomes. The eukaryotic cell
also contains complex DNA (many chromosomes/linear).

- Prokaryotes can only be unicellular. The structures

that are uniquely present in prokaryotes are the: nucleoid
(different from nucleus as it has no nuclear membrane),
pili, cell capsule, and fimbriae. The prokaryotic cell also
contains a single chromosome.

- The structures that are present in both type of cells are:

The genetic material (DNA), ribosomes, cytoplasm,
plasma membrane/cell membrane, cell wall (most in
prokaryotic cells ; plant and fungi for eukaryotic cells)
and flagella (for some eukaryotes). Plasmids are also
present in prokaryotic cell and eukaryotic cell (plant cell).
