Safety Calendar

The document discusses the importance of having a safety calendar at schools that lists the dates and times for mandatory fire, lockdown, and tornado drills. It notes that the school's current safety calendar was missing alternative dates for drills, which is important for flexibility. The author was asked to collaborate with administrators to revise the calendar to include alternate dates. The document also emphasizes that drills teach students critical skills like following directions and working with others in emergencies. It stresses that teachers have an ethical duty to protect students, so administrators must ensure staff are properly trained on safety protocols and evaluate drills for improvement.

Safety Calendar

Safety and security for all students and staff are extremely important to school leaders.

Our district requires that all schools perform a monthly fire drill and quarterly lockdown drill.

Additionally, two tornado drills should be performed ideally during weather preparedness

months. To ensure that these critical tasks are fulfilled, each school should have a safety calendar

that lists all the dates and times each drill should take place. In reviewing the one at our school,

there were specific dates and times listed; however, there were no alternative dates listed, which

is very important to consider. These unprecedented times we live in now have shown us that we

must be proactive and have an alternate plan. My principal thanked me for bringing that to her

attention and has requested that I collaborate with the administrators on revising the calendar.

Our vision includes students learning in a safe and structured environment. The strategies

and various plans involved in the drills teach students how to respond in an emergency without

becoming overwhelmed and anxious. Students learn how to think critically when their normal

routine is interrupted as well. Following directions is a life skill that must be learned across

multiple areas. During a drill, students must follow procedures, specific protocols, and adult

guidance. Our school’s mission includes collaboration among staff and students as well. Safety

drills are a perfect example of students and staff working together for the good of each other.

However, there is an ethical responsibility that is required of the teacher.

Teachers have a responsibility to protect students from things and situations that are

deemed harmful and unsafe. Therefore, school leaders must ensure that their staff is properly

trained in for events such as those we have drills for. Moreover, they should meet with their staff

after each drill has been performed for evaluation and assessment so that areas of improvement

can be discussed.

No one can predict when an emergency should arise. However, a proper and effective

safety plan will prepare you for those unexpected events. School leaders must ensure that staff

training regarding safety protocols is ongoing. Not only will it increase safety, but it will prevent

legal consequences as well. There are several court cases involving schools’ misuse of

procedures and involuntary negligence. My pastor would always say, “When the time to do has

come, the time to prepare will have passed.”
