POETRY IN REGION 1
ILOCOS REGION

Pedro Bucaneg, a Filipino Poet and blind since birth who

collaborated with Lopez in the translation of the Doctrina


into Iloko, for having been the first known Ilokano poet,
and as the "Father of Ilokano Poetry and Literature."
Bucaneg, blind since childhood, authored the popular epic
known as "Biag ni Lam-ang" ("Life of Lam-ang") written in
the 17th century. Some Iloko writers credit Pedro Bucaneg,
who collaborated with Lopez in the translation of the
Doctrina into Iloko, for having been the first known
Ilokano poet.
REGION 2
CAGAYAN VALLEY

Fernando Maramag was an excellent poet and journalist in English. He had a rich
styleand deep understanding of human nature – qualities which made his poetry
appealing to allreaders. On the other hand, his editorial writings “exerted great
influence on the various phasesof the Filipino way of life, particularly in its government,
economics, education and politics,”according to a critic. His famous work is The Rural
Maid.

CENTRAL LUZON

Francisco Balagtas y de la Cruz (April 2, 1788 –


February 20, 1862), also known as Francisco
Baltazar, was a prominent Filipino poet, and is
widely considered as one of the greatest
Filipino literary laureate for his impact on
Filipino literature. The famous epic, Florante at
Laura, is regarded as his defining work. In fact,
the events of this poem were meant to parallel
his own situation.He wrote his poems in
Tagalog, during an age when Filipino writing
was predominantly written in Spanish.
REGION 4-A
CALABARZON

A la juventud filipina (English Translation: To The


Philippine Youth) is a poem written in Spanish by
Filipino writer and patriot José Rizal, first

presented in 1879 in Manila, while he was studying
at the University of Santo Tomas. A La Juventud
Filipina is an inspiring poem that states that the
Filipino youth are capable of great heights. It
urges the Filipino youth to reach their potential by
harnessing their skills and talents for the
betterment of our countrymen.
REGION 4-B
MIMAROPA

he Ambahan: A Mangyan Poem of Mindoro. The


ambahan is the traditional poetry of the Hanunuo
Mangyans of Oriental Mindoro. It is usually written
on bamboo in the Surat Mangyan, a centuries-old
pre-Spanish script. The syllabic script and the
ambahan poetry have complemented each other,
contributing to their continued existence today.

Presently residing at Tabuk, Kalinga, Philippines and presently

Luisa A. Igloria (CAR)


She is a Filipina American poet and author of various award-winning
collections, and is the current Poet Laureate of Virginia. Originally
from Baguio City in the Philippines Some of his poems are
Cartography and won on 1993 National Book Award for Poetry,
Encanto won on 1994 National Book Award for Poetry and Blood
Sacrifice which won on 1998 National Book Award for Poetry
