3.2 How Playbooks are Organized
• Every playbook consists of six sections: Personnel Groups, Formations, Huddles, Plays, Routes, and Drills.
• Personnel Groups are how you determine which players are on the field in your play.
• Formations are how you align players on the field for a play.
• Huddles are how players align before enacting a play.
• Plays are drawn to illustrate how, when, and where the players move.
• Routes are your saved player movements as route trees.
• Drills turn your plays into flashcards for rapid learning.

005, 113, or 230, where each digit is the number

of running backs (RB), tight ends (TE), and wide
receivers (WR), respectively. Since these digits must
add up to five, the last digit is commonly left off as it
made obvious by the first two. For example, 005 is
more commonly represented as just 00 (an empty
set with 5 WR), 113 is more commonly known as 11
personnel (1 RB, 1 TE, and 3 WR), and 230 would
be 23 (a set for running the ball with 2 RB, 3 TE,
and no WR).
For the defense, the makeup of any defensive personnel
group can also be expressed in a 3-digit form, and since
the number of defenders is fixed at 11 the last digit will
also be commonly left off. On defense, the three digits
tell you how many defensive linemen (DL), linebackers
(LB), and defensive backs (DB) will be on the field. For
example, a 344 defensive personnel group means there
are 3 DL, 4 LB, and 4 DB, though it will almost always be
shown as simply 34.

3.5 Huddles
Before players execute a play, they may break from a huddle and align in their formation. While this is probably
not necessary for your whole playbook, having players break from a huddle when seeing plays in Drills can
greatly add to the realism of the exercise.

To create a huddle to use in a play, first go to Huddles in one of your own playbooks and select ADD NEW.
Enter a name for your new Huddle in the Huddle name field, and this can be as simple as combining the
personnel with the shape – for example, “11 circle.”

Select whether this huddle is for the Offense or Defense under HUDDLE TYPE. Then select the
PERSONNEL tab and pick the Personnel Group used in your new huddle. Then select the FOCUS TYPE
tab and choose whether you want your huddle to be all facing a certain Point on the field (to make a standard
circular huddle) or you want the players all facing a certain Line on the field. Lastly, select SAVE at the top
right of this side menu to create your huddle.

Now you will see your huddle on the

3D field and it is ready to be used in
any Plays with that Personnel Group.
By default all Point huddles focus on
a point in the middle of the huddle so
all the players in the huddle face each
other. To change this, select a huddle
and then EDIT at the top right.
You’ll have to go to 2D VIEW to change where they all look. If you select and drag the eye icon to different
places on the field, you will see all the players face that point. Drop the eye icon where you want them to
look in your Point huddle. You can also drag players around to customize your huddle if you want them in
something other than a circle. Remember to select SAVE at the top right when done.

By default all offense Line huddles look at their 40-yard line and all defense Line huddles look at their 45-yard
line. To change this, select a huddle and then EDIT at the top right. You’ll have to go to 2D VIEW to change
where they all look. If you select and drag the eye icon (which is now attached to a yard line) to different yard
lines on the field, you will see all the players face that yard line. Drop the eye icon where you want them to look
in your Line huddle. You can also drag players around to customize your huddle if you want them in a different
alignment. Remember to select SAVE at the top right when done.
3.6 Plays
Plays are the core of GoArmy Edge Football, and are created by combining Personnel Groups and Formations
into football plays with an offense going against a defense.

Drawing Player Movement There are two types of paths, or line types: straight and
curved. To change your preferred type of path drawing,

To draw motion, select the path icon at the bottom
left of the screen and select Draw pre-play motion.
Click on the 2D player and drag to draw their pre-
play motion. To return to post-snap movement, select
Draw routes in that same tools menu.
Once a player’s path is drawn, there are options for each
path segment: Segment speed, Movement type, and Hip
turn. To modify a path segment, click on the 2D player and
then click a segment of the player’s path so it is highlight-
ed. Select the gear icon at the bottom right of the screen.
Segments can be Full speed, 3/4 speed, 1/2 speed, or 1/4
speed. Movement type includes Backpedal, Shuffle Left,
Shuffle Right, Run Forward, and Pass Drop (for QB’s
only).

Additional movement types are available for some position

groups. Hip turn controls the hip movement direction of
players from segment to segment. When changing a play-
er’s hip turn direction, select the segment before the turn and
choose Turn clockwise, Turn counter-clockwise, or Use path default. GoArmy Edge Football makes a best
guess on which direction a player’s hips would rotate for any path segment junction. After making a change to
any of these items, remember to click SAVE on the right side of the menu.

you to snap back to the beginning of the play. The right arrow with the vertical line allows you to run the play
at half speed. The right arrow runs the play at normal speed. The double right arrow runs the play at double

huddle, and select ADD at the top. The huddle is now added to the beginning of the play. To exit the Shifts
menu, select and highlight the original play information at the bottom of the list under ADD SHIFT and select
the X icon to return to the Play Editor. Remember to select SAVE when finished.
To add a shift, open the Shifts menu and select ADD SHIFT. Select the same offensive and defensive
formations that are used in the play, then select ADD at the top.
Select your new shift at the top of the list. Then select the route
icon at the bottom of the screen, and choose Edit Formation.
Move each player to their starting locations after the huddle.
To exit the Shifts menu, select and highlight the original play
information at the bottom of the list under ADD SHIFT and select
the X icon to return to the Play Editor. Note the shifts only show
in the Play Viewer, not the Play Editor.
3.7 Routes
Routes are saved in Route Trees, and allow you to save specific player paths of motion from plays. Rather
than redrawing the same 10-yard Out route every time, draw it once and save it as a Route. You can have any
other player at that position run the exact same route by selecting it later.
Each position has different route trees. To apply a saved route to a player from a route tree, click the
player, then select the player symbol icon at the bottom right corner of the screen. Choose Select route.
The different route trees will show first, select a route tree, and then select a route. The path selected is
highlighted in yellow on the player. Select SAVE in the top right of the editor settings box to apply the route to
the player.

Each position has over 8 different first steps with specialized animation. To apply First steps, click the player,
then select the player symbol icon at the bottom right corner of the screen. Select First steps. The path for the
first steps selected is highlighted in yellow on the player. Select SAVE in the top right of the First steps box to
apply the animation.
To Add Routes To Your Route Trees, you have to be editing a play in one of your playbooks. In the Play
Editor, select any player with a route you want to save, and then select his position icon at the bottom right to
open the bottom right menu. There you can select Save route, and either also create a new route tree for it or
add it to an existing route tree.

Select a route tree to add it to and enter your route’s name in the Route Name field. Then SAVE ROUTE.
If you want the route to go in a new Route Tree, select Create New Route Tree, enter a name for your new
route tree in the Tree Name field, and select ADD ROUTE TREE. Then enter a name for your route in the
Route Name field and SAVE ROUTE. Now you can select that route for any other player of that position to use
in any play in your playbook.

Drills turn your Plays into virtual flashcards, allowing players to get mental reps in any aspect of the
game of football.

these camera control options can be found either in
the camera menu at the bottom left or the gear menu
at the bottom right in any 3D field view.
Click or tap a location on the field and the camera
will snap to that view. This will anchor the camera to
that spot on the field and it will initially orient towards
the football. You can zoom in and out by rolling the

8. Whiteboard Plays
Whiteboard Mode is designed for quick, non-permanent interaction, as well as practice using
the features of GoArmy Edge Football. Anything created in Whiteboard Mode will not be saved.
The default starting formations show gun right pro twins vs a 4-3 defense.

9. Virtual Reality
Using Google Cardboard with GoArmy EDGE
Google Cardboard VR can be accessed in any 3D mode in GoArmy Edge Football.
First, it is recommended that you go into first person view of the player you’d like to be looking
from in Cardboard, however your view can still be changed after entering Cardboard mode. In
a 3D View, select the camera button on the bottom left. Select Enable Cardboard. Now you’ll
need to put your phone in your Cardboard viewer of choice.
You can view from any spot on the field or any player. To switch views once in Cardboard just
place the yellow dot on either the ground or another player then activate your Cardboard’s but-
ton. Some Cardboards will have a magnet, others will touch the screen, GoArmy Edge Football
works with either configuration. You can control playback by putting the dot above the horizon
and activating your Cardboard’s button. This will pause or resume playback.
If your Cardboard is an official unit it will have a QR code you can scan to set details about your
Cardboard’s optics. This can be changed or set by selecting the settings gear that appears at
the bottom center of the screen when in Cardboard mode. From there just follow the steps on
screen. When you want to exit Cardboard, select the 2D button at the top of your screen.
