7 LITERARY
STANDARDS
1. Universality
This famous novel written by Jose Rizal appeals to everyone,
regardless of culture, race, gender, and time which are all
considered significant. It is considered universal because it
served as an eye opener to every Filipino during the colonial
period. It is forever relevant as well, to the readers and plays
a significant part in Philippine history due to the
fundamental truths it conveys against Spanish colonialism.
The story line goes detailed with the society of the
Philippines during Spanish colonial period and features
aristocracy behind poverty and abuse of colonialists and
appeals to the heart and minds of any reader. Therefore, the
message of Noli Me Tangere is universal as it holds true to
any race, gender, and cultural barriers regardless of the time
it is written.

2.Artistry
The novel possessed artistry from the characters, plot, style,
message and its overall content. It has an aesthetic appeal not
only from the way it is written but also to the way it is
conveyed as it is considered fiction that exudes the reality -
social cancer that plagued the Philippines during the
Spanish Colonialism. The novel depicted scathing satire and
abiding patriotism.
The characters have different intrepretation from Ibarra -
symbolizes patriotism, Maria Clara - symbolizes innocence,
Padre Damaso - portrays the greed of the Spanish clergy,
Sisa - portrays the abuse the nation experienced during the
Spanish occupation. The plot of the story had different shift
that transformed the mood, allowing the readers to get
inside the characters' head. The message was there to remind
the Filipino to be vigilant and to never allow our devotion
to be beholden. Lastly, it represented a work that was
theoretically informed but was not cumbered by jargon
which made it interesting as if a timeless poetry.

3.Intellectual Value
The political novel "Noli Me Tangere" by Jose Rizal deals
with colonialism, religion, and power. Doing this fruitful act
is a kind of obligation for the young generation rather than
a positive desire of their free will or will to do so. The
popular novel talks about the promotion of the Philippines'
welfare. It happened to explain alleged inequities of the
Spanish Catholic friars and the ruling government during
the colonization of the Philippines by Spain. Noli me
Tangere was seen as one of the resources that prompted the
Philippine Revolution of 1896 to initiate Filipino patriotism.
The epic not only stirred dozing Filipino mindfulness, but
the reason for pursuing autonomy was also resolved.
Therefore, the idea it emitted has been possessed a princess
intellectual value reminding the Filipinos to never allow
themselves to questioned their devotion to their motherland
and to never get intimidated by the invasion of other
country.
4.Suggesstiveness
The novel possessed suggestiveness in a sense that it
conferred the contemporary issue during the occupation.
The novel invoked the struggles of the Fipilino in their own
land and the type of cancer that plagued the nation that was
so terrible in a sense that the sufferer could not bear to be
touched which is called social cancer. The novel unraveled
and conjured the strong emotional suffering of the people of
the Republic of the Philippines that was implied by the
struggles of Ibarra which depicted the symble of patriotism.
Not only that, the novels defined the characters of symbols
in their own right in the likes of Padre Damaso -
characterized the greediness and Sisa - illustrated the abuse
experience by our motherland. The novel inspired and
provoked the thoughts and understanding of what happened
in the past beyond the actual words written on the page.
The novel was designed to be suggestive to remind the
Filipinos of the history brought by the Spanish Colonialism
and how their invasion affected the lives of Filipinos. This
novel served as a warning to Filipinos to never permit our
devotion to be beholden to one specific person, but to our
dear motherland.
5.Spritual Value
The spiritual value of this literature is to put justice in the
hands of the authorities and not in the hands of the
individual who seeks it. And there is often a connotation
that justice is not readily obtained, especially by those who
lack influence and money for the poor or so-called
poor. There is also a belief, however, that justice in this life
may not be served, but God is not idle and will give men the
things they deserve, whether it is for good or the
consequence of the wrongs they have done.
Above all, the novel elevated the spirit and soul of the
Filipino awakening their devotion and patriotism as to not
let the effort of our ancestors to waste. The novel served as a
motivation and inspiration to youth that it is better to make
a difference than do nothing at all. Therefore, it suggested
lessons and moral codes of the society about Filipino
resiliency and bravery.
6.Permanence
Noli Me Tangere holds the distinction of being the novel
published in Columbia (1887) that has not gone out of print
since its first publication, that has been translated into
various local and foreign languages, and that continues to be
read to this day. Noli Me Tangere is the first novel written
by Filipino patriot and national hero Dr. José Rizal. It aims
to enlighten the Filipinos on what is happening in the
country. They want people to fight for their country and
have total freedom. The novel showed permanence in the
sense that the boundary of time is none existence between
the past and the present of when it is written. As old as it
may be, the novel is of great significance and importance to
today's society as it served as the memory in the form of
fiction of what has happened before, historical fiction where
it sought to give reminders and advice to the youth about
patriotism and devotion to the nation against invaders.
Thus, its existence will forever remain in the hearts and
minds of Filipino resulting in its timeliness.
7.Style
One of the best features of Noli Me Tangere is its distinctive
style. A perfect mixture of literary genres like melodrama
and satire, but the plot is straight-up melodrama. The
characters used in the novel came from late colonial society,
from a respected general to a market woman. Rizal also
displays satire brilliantly, he created characters that are
relevant to the situation. The characters are used as an image
to reveal the destructive effects of religious and colonial
subjugation. Rizal illustrates a frightening picture of how
our country suffers from colonial oppression. He did also
included to show his beloved reflected as Maria Clara in the
novel. Jose Rizal created the Noli Me Tangere to show how
the country suffers in a way that speaks eloquently to
everyone not just Filipinos but everyone who suffers from
any oppression.
