1297-Design Basis Report-Temporary Jetty

This document provides details on the design assumptions, loads, analysis, and results for a temporary steel space frame structure. The design is based on the working stress method and AISC ASD code. Loads considered include self-weight, soil pressure, and a 6000 kg/m2 surcharge load. Analysis was conducted using STAADpro software. Results show the frame satisfies the 0.66fy stress limit and has a maximum deflection of 21mm, meeting the H/150 criteria for a temporary structure. The space frame was concluded to be safe for the given loads based on code guidelines.

BASIC ASSUMPTION

Basic assumptions made in design

Design is based on working stress method as per

AISE ASD

Mild Steel sections Fy = 345 MPa

Dead Load
Selfweight of the structure
Density of steel 7.850 T/m3

Lateral load
Soil density = 1.8 T/m^2
Φ = Angle of internal friction of soil = 30

Wind Load – Not considered

Earthquake load - Not considered

Since it is temporary structure, wind & earthquake

load is not considered.

3.0 TECHNICAL REFERENCE

AISE ASD code of practice for General Construction in steel

4.0 FACTOR OF SAFETY AND ALLOWABLE STRESS

Since the dead load of the structure is very less, lateral load will govern the design.
Maximum bending stress is restricted to 0.66fy under all load as per AISC ASD. Factor of
safety is built into the allowable stress recommended by the code.

5. SECTION USED:

Fig: Section Used into the design

Pile - P3 - outer dia is 164mm & 7mm thk.

Main frame horizontal & diagonal - B3 – 2L63.5x63.5x6 back to back.
Horizontal Runner - SR1 - outer dia is 100mm & 4mm thk.
Plan bracing - - 2L-63.5X63.5X6 back to back.
Wire rope - 25 mm dia

6. ANALYSIS RESULTS AND DESIGN:

Following loads and load combinations are considered in the analysis and design.

Load 1 DL - Dead load - self weight of structure and sheet weight

Load 2 LL1 - Lateral Load - surcharge
Load 3 LL2 – Lateral Load - sand filling load.
Load comb 11 Dead load + Lateral load.

Analysis of space frame of structure has been carried out on STAADpro with appropriate
load cases. STAADpro input and output file is attached along with the bending moment
diagrams and design results for frame members.
7. LOAD CALCULATIONS

Soil density = γs = 1.8 ton/m^3

Height of sand filling = 4.6 m
Angle of internal friction of soil = Φ = 30
Assuming surcharge q = 6000 kg /m2 on the top surface for lateral load
calculations. Crane movement will be restricted to 1.5 m from edge of the jetty.
That’s why the surcharge pressure will come assuming 45-degree angle, that mean
the pressure will be act like the following way.

Fig: Surcharge load distribution on the jetty wall

Coefficient of soil pressure = Ka = (1-sin Φ) / (1+sin Φ) = 0.33

Sand pressure = P1 = Ka.γs.h = 0.33 x 1.8 x 4.6 = 2.73 Ton/m

SAY 2.75 Ton/m (triangular load)

The uniform lateral pressure due to surcharge load on wall = P2 = Ka.q = 0.33 x 6 Ton/m2
= 1.98 Ton/m2

And, inside 1.5 m considering surcharge load 500 kg/m2, that’s mean P2’= Ka.qa= 0.33 x
.5 ton/m2 = 0.165 T/m2

Corresponding loads are applied in STAADpro file

8. Supports
Spring support provided at every 1m depth in all three directions.

For Main frame pile, the horizontal modulas of subgrade is calculation as per following.
For anchor pile which is group of 5 wooden piles driven up to 7m depth. Equivalent area
of 1100mmx1100mm per spring is assumed as follows
Anchor pile is simulated as single steel pipe of 200mm diameter for analysis purpose.
